Ideas about the American West, both in popular culture and in commonly accepted historical narratives, are often based on a past that never was, and fail to take into account important events that actually occurred. The exhibition Many Wests: Artists Shape an American Idea examines the perspectives of 48 modern and contemporary artists who offer a broader and more inclusive view of this region, which too often has been dominated by romanticized myths and Euro-American historical accounts.

The American artist Robert Colescott taught at Portland State University from 1957–1966. He would go on to develop a national and international career, culminating in being selected to represent the United States at the prestigious Venice Biennale in 1997. In the 1970s, Colescott began creating works based on iconic paintings from art history, inserting African-Americans into the visual narrative. Frequent themes include race, sex, gender equity, and politics; often presented with humor, in a fresh, explosive style. The Portland Art Museum recently hosted a retrospective of Colescott’s work, stating “his career has never been more relevant than at this present moment in time.” MICHAEL PARSONS _______________________________________ FINE ART Across the Park Blocks from the Portland Art Museum Robert Colescott 1925–2009, AMERICAN
