CLEAN UP YOUR PASSWORD MESS OUR TOP TIP FOR SECURE, UNFORGETTABLE PASSWORDS Be honest: How many passwords do you have, and how do you keep track of them? If you use the same password across multiple accounts and/or write them all down in a little black book, consider this article an intervention. Your password habits are putting your personal information in danger. According to a 2020 report from SecureAuth, more than 53% of people use the same password across multiple accounts. Most of them repeat the same password 3–7 times, but some people use the same password for as many as 10 accounts! This is totally understandable. It’s fatiguing to remember a dozen different passwords, and you lose time looking them up. But password repetition is also dangerous. Deep down, you already know why: If someone gets into one of your accounts, none of them are safe. Anybody who steals your little black book will be able to access everything from your bank accounts to your Netflix subscription. Fortunately, there’s one easy thing you can do to make sure you have unique, unforgettable passwords for all of your accounts: Invest in a password manager. A password manager is a piece of software that will help you create random, complex passwords. It will also store all of your passwords in one online “vault” protected by a master password. After you download your password manager, that master password is the only key you’ll need to remember! Most password managers are browser extensions, which means they work across multiple devices. If you use Google Chrome, for example, your password manager will remember your password for Facebook whether you’re logging in on your smartphone or your laptop. The best password managers — like Keeper, LastPass, and Password Boss — cost a few dollars a month for all of the key features, but there are also free options like Zoho. Either way, the peace of mind is worth the cost. You won’t have to worry about identity theft or your grumpy teenager stealing your password book and writing “I’m the worst mom ever” on your Facebook wall.
