A new program is now available to help children and youth in the Prescott and Russell region learn about and understand how to deal with issues like cyberbulling, peer pressure, and other situations they might encounter as they grow up. The program is called Ado/Teen IRL and stands for Teens in Real Life. It was developed in Durham Victim Services as a community project for that county to help young people develop healthy lifestyles by recognizing and dealing with some of the problems they may encounter among their peers, through social media, and in the overall community. Services aux Victimes Prescott and Rus- sell Victims Services (SVPRVS) contacted Durham Victim Services about getting help with adapting its project for use in a bilingual area like Prescott and Russell. The final result was unveiled February 6 during a special presentation at the United Counties of Prescott and Russell (UCPR) office in L’Orignal. «It`s for teens and those children 12 years and older,» said Marie Lemay, SVPRVS director general. «Because we`re speaking to local youth, we wanted to make sure it is relatable locally as far as the expressions that local children and teenagers use.» Ado/Teen IRL is designed as an inte- ractive program, featuring a virtual reality “in your shoes” review and discussion of various issues young people might face or have to deal with, a hands-on computer quiz that presents participants with a series of scenarios involving personal interactions and asking them how they might deal with the situation. There are also large-scale board-type games that let participants role dice or play a version of Twister to help them learn and also test their knowledge of social skills that safeguard against exploi- tation. The games and virtual simulations help teach young people about personal consent and their rights as an individual during social interactions, both in-person and on-line. The program is designed so that local community groups and official agencies like the OPP can use Ado/Teen IRL as part of their own community outreach projects with local youth. *OTQFDUPS/PSNBOE-BNPOUBOHF DVSSFOU commanding officer for the Russell County OPP detachment, expressed his support for the program and how it is «custom-made» for the region and will be a benefit for community policing.
