DENTISTRY = ART How the Desire to Use My Hands Made Me a Dentist
While shadowing, I learned that dentistry was the point at which medicine meets art.
is great. Everyone gets along, and we feel like one big family. This translates to our patients, too; it allows us to welcome them into a tight-knit group that cares for each other and our patients’ health. Outside of work, I enjoy the outdoors and UND Hockey. Hunting, fishing, and sports are big hobbies of mine, but more than anything, I love to spend time with my family. I have a beautiful wife and three little girls, one who was just born this September. We couldn’t be happier. “I learned that dentistry was the point at which medicine meets art.” My biggest tip for anyone (my daughters included!) wanting to maintain their oral health is to simply brush your teeth. The basic act of brushing and flossing your teeth is the best thing you can do for oral health, regardless of all the fancy products. Part of the reason this job is so rewarding is that I can help people every day, especially if it’s by relieving their pain. Being one of your dentists at Bismarck Advanced Dental and Implants has fulfilled me in ways I never thought possible. Thank you!
Let me explain. Dentistry requires the doctor to view the patient’s medical history fully. This includes what medications they’re taking and what they can tolerate regarding pain or specific materials used in their mouths. These scientific factors combine to allow the dentist to construct a finished product that looks nice. This is where the art comes in. Dentistry is set apart from other professions because it involves building something that has to look beautiful but also natural. The decision to become a dentist was easy. After attending college to study dentistry, the plan was to buy my own practice. I was discussing my options with a sales representative when he mentioned he knew a doctor who was hiring. I expressed interest, and he introduced me to Dr. Derik Hoerner with Bismarck Advanced Dental and Implants. We spoke on the phone, and I knew I wanted to work there before even hanging up. And since that call, I’ve been working alongside Dr. Hoerner to help people with their oral health needs. The best thing about working at Bismarck Advanced Dental and Implants is the technology we have available here. Cutting-edge technology such as 3D scanning and printing, lasers and in-house aligners help our patients in ways many other practices can’t.
Hi there! This is Dr. Christopher Klym with Bismarck Advanced Dental and Implants. I’d like to take this time to introduce myself and tell you about how I became one of your dentists at our practice. I discovered my interest in medicine during middle school. It sounds early, but it was the first time in my life that I was able to dive deep into science. Unlike the elementary mentions of the solar system, my time in middle school allowed me to do what I loved most about science — use my hands. Having the opportunity to be hands-on and discover the world of science changed my life. Being a hands-on individual, I didn’t want to become a doctor and sit behind a desk or roll around on my stool all day. No, that wasn’t for me. I needed to be able to build something and help others while doing it. Later, I had the opportunity to shadow a dentist. I didn’t know much about dentistry then, but I felt the need to go into the medical field since helping people using science was my priority.

DEALING WITH DENTAL PHOBIA? 4 Strategies to Help You Overcome Your Fear
One of the most common fears some people have is going to the dentist. About 9%–15% of Americans avoid going to the dentist because of anxiety or
fear — that’s 30–40 million people! But going to the dentist is vital for your dental and overall health. Here are four strategies to help you overcome your fear of the dentist. 1. ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR FEAR. Before you can overcome your dental phobia, you first need to recognize and understand why you’re afraid of it in the first place. Some of the most common reasons people have are the lack of control and fear of the unknown, embarrassment about their dental health, and bad experiences in the past. Once you acknowledge why you’re afraid, you can begin taking steps to overcome those fears.
2. FIND THE RIGHT DENTIST. The right dentist can make all the difference. You want to find a dentist’s office with a friendly staff who can answer your questions and great reviews from current patients. Once you find the right office, you will feel relaxed, comfortable, and confident about the care you will receive. SHOULD YOU TRY THE TIKTOK BALSAMIC VINEGAR SODA?
Dentists Say ‘No’
If you’re on TikTok or have teens who use the platform, you might have heard about a new, trendy way to quit soda. According to one viral video, it’s easy to go cold turkey: All you have to do is swap out your daily Coke for a blend of flavored sparkling water and balsamic vinegar. Tasty, right?
vinegar and similarly acidic flavored sparkling water is a perfect way to wear down the enamel that protects your teeth.
“Tooth erosion is permanent and may open the door for bacteria to cause cavities or infection,” the press release explains. “It can also make teeth appear discolored, as white enamel is worn away to expose the yellow layer below called dentin.”
Even if that combination does sound delicious to you, you should think twice before giving it a try. Apparently, the concoction can wreak havoc on teeth, to the point that it got the attention of the American Dental Association! They even put out a press release. It’s pretty rare for this official body to comment on TikTok fads. But in this case, they had to sound the alarm. According to the press release, drinking a combination of acidic balsamic
The ADA even quoted a dentist on the topic.
“I love balsamic vinegar, but I enjoy it more on my salad than in my drinking glass. It’s much kinder to the teeth than bathing them in a beverage blend of two acids,” said Dr. Edmond Hewlett. Yikes! Of course, soda is acidic, too — so what should you drink? The ADA recommends water or milk as more tooth-healthy alternatives. If you really want to have a soda or jump on the TikTok bandwagon, make sure you use a straw, rinse your mouth out with water, and snack on a dairy product like cheese afterward to neutralize the acid. If you’re already dealing with worn-down enamel from years of drinking acidic beverages, talk to your dentist about fillings for potential cavities and/or veneers to whiten up your smile. It’s not too late to get your confidence back.

Last month, we talked about how our All-on-4 implants improve your quality of life and can reduce the pain you experience. Our implants are permanent and are just as strong and functional as natural teeth. If you’re considering this dental procedure, here are four frequently asked questions we get about All-on-4 implants. THINKING ABOUT ALL-ON-4 IMPLANTS? Review Our Frequently Asked Questions!
3. LET YOUR DENTIST KNOW ABOUT YOUR FEAR. Unfortunately, dental anxiety is common, so be sure to voice your concerns, questions, or discomfort. Your dentist will have lots of experience helping people with the same fear and anxiety as you. Don’t bottle up your fear; let them know if you’re nervous. They want to give you the best care and make your exam an enjoyable experience. 4. BRING A FRIEND. Sometimes, having a loved one join you during your first appointment can do wonders. You will feel more relaxed and comfortable knowing you have a support system waiting for you in the lobby. At Bismarck Advanced Dental & Implants, we understand that visiting a new dentist, coming in for an annual exam, and following up on dental concerns can be stressful. We want to make you feel as comfortable as possible when you visit us. When you come to our office, we will cater to your needs, provide information, and answer your questions and concerns. We want nothing but the best for you and your oral health.
1. HOW ARE ALL-ON-4 IMPLANTS DIFFERENT FROM DENTURES?
Unlike dentures, dental implants are permanent solutions for replacing teeth. When you lose a tooth, your body will begin to absorb the minerals in your jaw and use them in other places. If you don’t replace the tooth root, the bone will start to deteriorate. Dentures rest on top of your gums and aren’t embedded in the jaw. However, All-on-4 implants help prevent further bone loss in the jaw and are more stable than dentures. 2. DOES THE PROCEDURE HURT? Our skilled and experienced dentists will ensure you feel numb and comfortable during your procedure. The sedative medications we give you before your surgery should make installing the implants virtually painless. You may experience discomfort, soreness, and swelling for a few days after your procedure. But most patients return to normal after a few days. 3. WILL I NEED A BONE GRAFT? Most patients are able to avoid a bone graft. However, everyone’s dental needs are different. We have state-of-the-art technology that allows us to give you the best care possible. Therefore, before surgery, we use our tools and resources to plan the exact placement of each implant at different angles to use your existing bones. This allows us to avoid bone grafting. 4. WILL I NEED TO CHANGE MY DIET POST-SURGERY? You may have difficulty eating hard, brittle, or chewy food for a few days. Because of the hidden metal framework in the implants, your new teeth will be solid and stable. So, you will be able to return to your regular diet within 6-10 weeks post-surgery. We’ve seen many great outcomes with our All-on-4 implants. So if you’re considering dental implants, call your friends at Bismarck Dental & Implants to help. We will be happy to inform you about the procedure process and what to expect and answer your questions or concerns. So, call us today to see what we can do for you!

state of mind, try to delegate some of your responsibilities, take up a calming hobby like yoga or meditation, or build a relaxing bath into your nightly routine. If your stress is affecting other areas of your life, you might also consider seeing a mental health professional for help. 2. REDUCE YOUR INTAKE OF ALCOHOL AND CAFFEINE. A 2016 study found that drinking alcohol almost doubles your chance of grinding your teeth! Coffee has an even worse effect, boosting the odds by 150%. If you cut down on these things, you might sleep better and grind less. 3. PRACTICE GOOD SLEEP HYGIENE. To do this, you’ll need to develop habits that promote better sleep, like going to bed and waking up at the same time each day; getting the recommended 7–9 hours of rest; sleeping in a dark, quiet place; and keeping electronics out of the bedroom. All of these things will help you get quality, grind-free sleep. You can find more details at CDC.gov/sleep . If you’re still in pain after trying these natural options — or if the state of your teeth is deteriorating — schedule a visit to your dentist right away. In the office, you’ll learn about the best option for you, whether that’s a mouthguard or something more permanent, like dental correction to repair and reshape your teeth. Have You Tried Them All?
If you regularly wake up with a sore jaw and painful headaches, then you might be clenching your teeth while you sleep. This is actually a dangerous problem you should address right away.
Too much clenching and grinding can wear down your teeth or even break them, ruining your smile! So, what can you do?
Mouthguards are a classic tool to prevent grinding, but they can also be a pain in the butt. You have to buy one, take it in and out every night, and remember to bring it with you on vacation. If your grinding issue doesn’t seem urgent, you may want to try these Mayo Clinic-approved natural remedies before booking an appointment with your dentist.
1. ELIMINATE SOURCES OF STRESS. Stress and anxiety while you’re awake can lead to grinding while you sleep. To improve your
