SCARLETT RAVEN

Foreword There are few moments more life-changing than becoming a mother for the first time. In giving birth to her son, the landscape painter Scarlett Raven found her true calling. Her breathtaking new collection, I am Reborn , symbolises her growth as both a woman and an artist; each wander through the forest is seen through a child’s eyes, encouraging viewers to rediscover their senses and embrace the beauty of nature. Each of the textured paintings is titled from a poem, including the sonnets of the English Romantic poet WilliamWordsworth, and the powerful words of the American author and civil rights activist Maya Angelou. “Pregnancy and becoming a new mum have inspired me to see the world again through my children’s eyes,” says Scarlett, whose paintings are owned by celebrities including the Hollywood actor Orlando Bloom and the band manager of Queen, Jim Beach. “I pushed my son’s pram through the woodlands, and he was captivated

by the trees and light moving in the wind. It was magical.”

The series of three hand-embellished limited edition prints is accompanied by a selection of original oil paintings, each of which was created by hand in Scarlett’s studio in West Sussex. She often paints alongside her baby son, Harvey, explaining: “I watch how he sees colours, shapes, smells and sounds, and how he’s loving and accepting of all of his senses. The excitement and beauty he sees in everything just brings me back to the moment.” Scarlett adds: “It’s been the most powerful time of my life: I’ve completely transformed, both physically and emotionally. My children have given me purpose. They have introduced me to life and painting again; I feel reborn.” Find out more about the collection online or by contacting your local Castle Fine Art gallery.

“The colours are very bright, almost childlike; they remind you of being young and fearless, a time when anything was possible.”

In the studio “Having a baby and watching him discover his senses for the first time couldn’t be any more inspiring for my paintings. When people look at my artworks, I want them to feel the amazement that babies feel when looking at something for the first time. They’re a portal to a magical, safe place. “Harvey has helped me to see things clearly again. I watch how he sees colours, shapes, smells and sounds, and how he’s loving and accepting of all of his senses. My son has inspired me to look at things like I did when I was a child: to not fear the wind on my face, or the noise outside. “I’m not fighting the experience, I’m in awe of it. It’s less about the destination and more about the journey. These paintings are alive. They are hopeful, magical, strong, powerful…they are fearless.”

“The sun mothers the land, soothing the trees and flowers and creating life. My son saw something exceptional in those trees, and I wanted to capture it.”

A new perspective

“Composition and colour are the new driving forces in my art; I’m interested in how they create movement through the eyes of the viewer. I live a lot in an imaginary world of colour, and this is my way of understanding geometry and the science of patterns and shapes. “Nature has a higher intelligence, and a remarkable language of its own. Each time I view these paintings, I see and feel something different. The movement, freshness and energy take my breath away and provide beautiful escapism. “When painting trees, I’m painting new friends and new lives. I feel like every branch has feelings, a story and a meaning. The upright trees give a sense of alignment, protection, strength and motherhood. Adding water really grounds a painting. I love the texture and calmness, and the translucency against the strength of the trees.” “These paintings are alive. They are hopeful, magical, strong, powerful…they are fearless.”

“Having a baby and watching him discover his senses for the first time couldn’t be any more inspiring for my paintings. I experience everything through his first times, and it’s magical. I’m rediscovering my senses through him.”

Biography

Born: 1986, Chichester Lives and works: East Wittering, West Sussex Education: Central Saint Martins School of Art

Exhibitions: National Army Museum (2019), Cass Art (2019), Titanic Belfast (2018), Manchester Central Library (2018), Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Building (2016) Scarlett’s childhood was defined by creativity. Her father was the late saxophonist Raphael Ravenscroft, who played with acts like ABBA, Pink Floyd, Tina Turner and Marvin Gaye. Encouraged by her model mother, Scarlett explored her artistic side as an escape from her struggle with dyslexia. Following her first solo exhibition on Cork Street, London, at the age of just 21, her career took off and she has since been featured by titles such as ES Magazine, Tate Etc., Tatler and Time Out . Collaborations have included working with the art supplies retailer Cass Art and the English paint manufacturer Winsor & Newton. Using abstract forms, patterns and sculptural painting to imply movement, Scarlett explores the romance of nature and its ability to affect and reflect emotion. Inspired by artists like Frida Kahlo and Vincent van Gogh, she channels her own life experiences into each landscape. She is passionate about colour, often applying oil paint with her hands instead of a paintbrush.

Scarlett says: “Paint is thrown on, splattered and flicked. Spitting and dancing, it creates a whole world of magic.”
