Peter awakened and there stood an angel. The chains fell from his side. The prison door opened. Past the sleeping guards they went, and out into the street. There the angel left Peter. And where do you sup pose Peter went? Yes, he went at once to the place where he knew his friends were gathered praying for him. How surprised they were! At first they couldn’t believe that it was Peter. But Peter kept on knock ing at the door until they opened it. Then how they rejoiced with Peter over the wonderful answer to their prayer!

The old captain had been telling the story of his being wrecked in the Gulf Stream. “All that we had to eat in that time was some raw corn,” he said, with a glow of thankfulness instead of melan choly tones many others would have used. “W e suffered much, but we had good courage. . . . At first, when great waves swooped down upon us, we cried for mercy. One of the men felt his grasp loosening, and called on God. Jack Lam bert said, ‘Messmates, let us all pray to gether, at morning, noon, and night, and thank God as we did on land.’ “ 'Ay, ay!’ we answered back as heart ily as we could. After that, God seemed right with us as every voice pleaded reg ularly with the Almighty. Just at the end of a morning prayer one cried, ‘Sail ho!’ and we saw the ship that saved us. Jack’s plan was Daniel’s plan—and God’s plan!” —T he Sunday School Times. A Glad 'Prayer Meeting A cts 12:5-17 Memory Verse: “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee” (Psa. 56:3). Approach: Once more the enemies of the Lord Jesus Christ began to make trouble for His followers. Herod, the king, killed James, the brother of John, with the sword, and Peter he threw into prison. L e s s o n S to r y : if the time had come for him to die. Peter was chained to four guards, and soon Herod planned to bring him before the people and let them decide whether he should live or die. What could Peter’s friends do to help him? They did exactly the right thing. They gathered together and prayed. They prayed and prayed, and still God did not seem to be answering their prayer. And what of Peter? How did he feel? Was he afraid? No, he was a very dif ferent Peter from the one who, just a few months before, had been afraid even to say that he was a disciple of Jesus! Peter was so fearless now that he even slept soundly at night, for he was able to forget the sol diers that stood by. Then, of a sudden, the answer to faith ful prayers came. An angel, and not Herod, was to lead Peter forth from prison. How sorrowful the rest of the disciples were! Would Herod k i l l P e t e r , too? Brave P eter, who had stood up boldly and had preached to the great crowds of people! It seemed as

Object Lesson A H ard -B oiled P risoner

Objects: A quart milk bottle with a hard-boiled egg on the inside. (Remove the shell and grease the egg with vaseline so it will slide easily. Rinse th.e bottle out with boiling water, and immediately place the egg in the mouth of the bottle. The suction will draw the egg into the bottle. Do this prior to appearing before the group.) Lesson: Sh! SH! There is a hard-boiled prisoner here this morning. Would you like to see him? This hard-boiled egg is a pris oner in this milk bottle. No matter which way I turn the bottle or how hard I shake it, the egg does not come out. This egg in the bottle reminds me of the time when Peter was in prison. Peter, how ever, was not “hard-boiled.” He was a kind Christian man. Blit it seemed impossible that Peter should ever come out of the prison a free man. King Herod had com manded the soldiers to keep a careful guard over Peter. Herod did not realize that God would answer prayer. That night while Peter was sleeping, an angel came and delivered him, because the people of God were praying. Some one has said that prayer is the Christian’s breath, and this gives me an idea as to how we may get Mr. Egg out of his prison. I will blow into the bottle. Out comes the egg! (Before removing the mouth from the bottle, turn the bottle up, allowing the egg to fall into the neck of the bottle. The compressed air in the bottle will force the egg out.) Boys and girls, you may never be per secuted and put in prison as Peter was, but there will be many problems in your life which can be solved only by prayer.

3:8-18 his lips that they speak no guile: a11 Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. 12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. 13 And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good?

1 Peter 3 :8 Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another; love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous; 9 Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. 10 For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and
