1 Peter 1:17 And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s work, pass the time of your so journing here in fear: 18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, ■21 Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God. 22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto un feigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: 23 Being born again,* not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. 2:2 0 For what glory is it , if, when ye be buf feted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. 21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: 22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: 23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again^ when he suffered. _he threatened not; but committed himself to nim that judgeth right eously: 24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to

sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. 25 For ye were as sheep going astray^ but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls. Golden Text: “Christ also hath once suf fered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God” (1 Pet. 3:18). Devotional Reading: 2 Cor. 5:14-21. Outline and Exposition I. T he B lood (1:17-21) P ETER exhorts believers to “pass the time of your sojourning here in fear.” Under law, one’s manner of life was governed by dread. Believers are redeemed from such a manner of life, but not in or der that they should treat the law with dis respect, or adopt a lower standard. God is still the righteous God, judging accord ing to every man’s work, and He does not overlook any loose manner of living. But the “fear” is not to be the dread of the criminal, but the reverential trust of the child.

Writing to believers, Peter makes plain that their redemption had been secured, not by silver and gold, but by the precious blood of Christ. The blood of Christ is the price paid for redemption of those who were bound by traditions received from the fathers. The blood of Christ answers every charge which could possibly be made against the believer. It is the blood of One who was without blemish and without spot. Like the sacrifice of old, He had been examined and tested, and when He was tried, nothing of evil was found in Him. He was the satisfactory and complete Sac rifice for sin (v. 19). His death was in no wise an after thought of God to meet an unforseen emer gency. The "emergency” was seen before the foundation of the world. Both the Fa ther and the Son knew the purpose for which the divine Lamb had come into the world. The cross, with its sacrificial and substitutionary death, had ever been before the mind of God. In God’s own time, Christ was manifested-—not a moment too soon nor too late (v. 20). And by this One who died we believe in God. W e must note that the faith that saves is that which involves the resurrec tion (v. 21). II. T he W ord (1:22, 23) While the death of Christ purchases re demption, it does not in itself- bring life. For the repentant, believing sinner, guilt is settled by means of the blood, sins are put away, the record of wrongdoing is blotted out, and nothing remains against which God can find any fault. But in this provi sion, God has acted righteously, demand ing full penalty for every sin. God has kept His word that He will “by .no means clear the guilty,” but by the death of Christ as-the Substitute and Sacrifice, God’s word has been fully kept. But if that were all, God’s justice would be vindicated and maintained, but His love would remain un satisfied. Unless there is a resurrection to life, nothing but death is imminent. But God raised Jesus from the dead, and this resurrection was righteously accomplished (cf. Heb. 13:20). Having thus cleared the way of every obstacle, and taken away every sin, God can righteously bestow life as a free gift. And this He does, not by creative power as in the first creation, but by procreative action bringing in a new creation. The members of the first creation were crea tures; the members of the new creation are children, being bom again, or from above (cf. John 3:1-7). The instrument used in giving birth to souls is the Word of God (v. 23). The words, “which liveth and abideth for ever,”
