B U Y E R S ’ GU I D E P R I Z E C U N T E S T AWARDS Below we reproduce the letter which received the First Prize in the Buyers’ Guide Prize Contest ending on December 31, 1938. The new contest opened January 3, 1939, and is to close June 30, 1939. Mrs. E. M. Ritenour, of Chadwick, 111., was a close sec ond, and her letter referred to the largest number of KING’S BUSINESS advertisers from whom she had made purchases. She named th ir te e n firms, but neglected to mention the value of the purchases, so that her otherwise perfect letter could bring her only 70% rating.
It may interest our readers and future contestants to know something of the method employed in rating letters received in this contest. Our ratings are based on a percentage scale, 100% being the highest award possible. The features which we study in these letters, and the frac tion of 100% awarded for each, are as follows: For largest number of firms mentioned............................... 30% For highest value of goods purchased................................. 30% For best reference to THE KING’S BUSINESS.............. 10% For best reference to the Buyers’ Guide............................. 10% For best reader interest and religious reference................ 20% 100 % Ruth Watkins, of Laurens, S. C., whose letter is repro duced below, was awarded the First Prize. She was the only contestant who mentioned any values of goods purchased. She corresponded with e ig h t KING’S BUSINESS advertisers, and expended $9.65. Her rating was 87.12%.
Mrs. Olive Peyton, of Rochester, Minn., who ranked third, did business with s ix KING’S BUSINESS advertisers. Like Mrs. Ritenour, she did not tell us how much she pur chased. Her letter brought her rating to 33.8%. Among the other contestants whose letters are not repro duced here, but whose work is of almost equal value, were: Emma A. Wiedemann, of Philadelphia, Pa., whose rating was.................................... 51.40% Mrs. A. R. Moore, of McKittrick, Calif., whose rating was....................................................... 51.40% Sadie Mae Bruce, of San Antonio, Tex., whose rating was............ 46.90% Faith L. F IRST PR IZE 1° the October issue of The Harvester was an ad showing beautiful hand-made linen handker chiefs made in '■China by the natives at the Home of Onesiphorus. In December I sent #2.00 for some handkerchiefs, to give for Christ mas presents. Some of the people to whom I gave the handkerchiefs said that they were pret tier than any others they had receivea. A woman to whom I showed them thought they were beau tiful and said she was going to get some after Christmas. In the March issue I saw also ads of DAVID C. COOK PUBLISH ING CO., Elgin, 111., and MONTGOMERY WARD, Chicago, 111. I wrote to each for a catalogue. This summer I ordered a dress pattern and a^crochet book from Mont gomery Ward. I 'am interested in crocheted bed spreads and dining-table covers; so I ordered this crochet book, Modern Table Settings , to get some pretty crochet patterns. It has lovely table covers and luncheon set patterns in it. I bought a small magnifying glass from David C. Cook Company. In March I sent a dime each for the following sample copies, The Biblical Digest , Chicago, 111.,
Laurens, S. C. December 28, 1938
and the Christian Readers* Digest , Omaha, Nebr. Both were very interesting and instructive. In October I sent an order of #3.95 for Christmas cards, paper, and ribbon to the THOMAS TERRY STUD IO S, in Westfield, Mass. I sold the cards and paper and made a little profit on them. And in December I bought a #1.00 box of Christian Greeting Christ mas cards for my own use from PEASE GREET ING CARDS, INC., Buffalo, N. Y. I ordered a beautiful #5.00 Picture Bible in October from the FAM ILY ALTAR BOOK SHOP, Minneapolis, Minn., for #2.50. There was a special price on books and Bibles in October. This Bible is certainly beautiful and has a nice binding, a number of colored illustra tions, besides illustrations throughout the text. It has invaluable Bible study helps for Sunday- school teachers and students. I have been taking TH E KING’S BUSINESS magazine for about a year. I certainly have en joyed reading every copy of it. Sincerely, (Miss) Ruth Watkins.
TH E KING’S BUSINESS, BUYERS’ GUIDE:
I have noticed in several copies of THE KING’S BUSINESS magazine that you offer prizes to any one writing a letter telling how he or she used TH E KING’S BUSINESS Buyers’ Guide, and I have read several letters of people who used the Buyers’ Guide. I have answered several ads from the Buyers’ Guide this year; so I thought I would take advantage of the contest and tell how I had used your index to adver tisers. I have bought several articles, and have been well pleased. First, I noticed the ad (I think in the March issue of TH E KING’S BUSINESS) of THE HOME OF ONESIPHORUS, American Office, Chicago, 111. I wrote for a free booklet on u Helping China’s Helpless.” I received this, and also a copy of their magazine, The Har vester. They have been sending it to me every quarter this year, and I have enjoyed reading it.
