Your Medical Library Support Staff
As your healthcare team partner, it is an honor to support physicians, advanced practice clinicians, pharmacists, nurses, clinical nurse specialists, psychologists, allied health professionals, research scientists, and clinical administrators with just-in-time clinical evidence-based practice information.
Our goal is to provide easy access to authoritative information resources and user-focused services in support of best-in-class evidence-based answers to complex clinical questions.
You can call on us for help with literature searches, article or book chapter retrieval, and/or obtain instruction on how to construct a clinical or research question and search strategy.
Of the 1345 requests the librarians filled in 2025, 56% were for patient care and 44% for educational and research purposes.

Medical Librarian Services
Healthcare providers face constant information overload making it difficult to quickly identify relevant, accurate, and critically appraised patient care information. Librarians can assist with finding the right information, at the right time, for the right patient or purpose • Quickly and easily identify the most recent information on a clinical topic • Evaluate the validity of information and avoid misinformation • Stay up to date on new findings via Discover search or Library eResources journal alerts • Avoid information overlook
The Silicon Valley Medical Librarians are known for the speed that we deliver information (articles, book chapters, literature search results), and the accuracy and quality of the information provided.
In 2025, we delivered 3,460 documents and saved approximately 960 hours of clinician time by conducting librarian-mediated searches.
The Ask the Librarian online request forms are available on the MySutter intranet and One Search portal. Requests are filled according to priority: Urgent ASAP or less than 24 hours Rush 2 business days (M-F) or less Normal 5 business days (M-F) or less Print Books: The librarians do not purchase print books for clinical staff. However, there are small collections of print materials available at the Palo Alto and Burlingame locations.

Medical Librarians • Curate diverse and valuable collections. Select the books, journals, databases, and other resources needed for research and clinical care. • Manage resource access to support data discovery. A single sign-on “opens the door” to a robust index of open access and proprietary articles and book chapters.
Find the hard-to-find. Conduct comprehensive literature reviews to extract precise results.

• Provide reference and instruction support. Answer reference questions, fill information requests, and educate clinicians and healthcare providers on library research resources and evidence-based practice search methods.

One Search (Ovid Discovery Service) is a one-stop portal that enables finding and retrieving information. Log in with your Sutter Health email address and password.
One Search Benefits 1. Search Discover to find the vast collections of journals, books, databases, and online sources 2. 3. Save searches, citations, or create a journal alert in One Search . 4. Subject portals on topics such as artificial intelligence , evidence-based practice and continuing education.

If you are unable to download a full text article from our collections, search engines, or publisher sites, simply submit an Ask the Librarian online request form either from the One Search home page or Discover citation.

One-Stop-Shop
Activate a Journal Alert: Search for your favorite journal from the One Search, Library eResources journal index or Discover search citations. Example: Type in the search box Current Opinion in Pediatrics . Click the yellow bell to activate the journal alert. The journal will then be activated in your “ Account ” queue. Saving searches and citations in Discover : After doing a search, click the yellow star in the search box. The results will be saved in your “Account” queue wherein you can “tell” the system to generate new search results daily, weekly, monthly, or never. The new search results will then be delivered to your Outlook inbox. To save citations, conduct a search and click the yellow star to bookmark the citation(s). Get Help: If you need a literature search, articles or book chapters, Ask the Librarian for help by submitting an online request form with the details (No PHI). The librarians are expert searchers and skilled in discerning if an article was retracted, biased, or if a journal is flagged for editorial misconduct.
Take Note: If there are citations from PubMed or publishers where you cannot obtain the full text yourself or you run into a paywall, simply submit an Ask the Librarian online request form. The librarians can borrow articles or book chapters on your behalf from other lending libraries in the United States and Canada.
