agricultural products as direct agricultural emissions are mostly methane and nitrous oxide rather than carbon dioxide which are not included in the emissions trading scheme. It is however important to take note of this system as it will provide agricultural producers with financial opportunities if they are in a position to capture carbon.
Farm2Fork Strategy
The Farm2Fork strategy, as part of the EU’s policy framework on sustainability, has
more immediate and definite implications for South African producers, and has specific implications for trade in agricultural products to the EU. According to this framework:
• Bilateral trade agreements will include climate and sustainability goals on pesticide use, animal welfare, antimicrobial resistance, etc. These are underpinned by goals within the EU, which require the EU to reduce pesticide use by 50% by 2030, reduce nutrient losses by 50% by 2023 and decrease the use of fertilizers by 20% by 2023. The area of agricultural land under organic farming should also increase from a level of 8% in 2018 to 25% by 2030. • Legislation will be rolled out to avoid or minimize the trade of products associated with deforestation and forest degradation • The EU will lead the work on global sustainability standards and environmental footprint calculations. Products sold in the EU would have to be labeled accordingly.
