The greenfield box plant is expected to be complete in the spring of 2025. CEO Mark Kowlzan said that the company has been looking at moving out of some of its older, in- efficient operating facilities and that the new plant in Arizona would more than double its existing capacity. “Some of you may have seen news about an investment we made in the Phoenix, Ari- zona area. In order to serve a growing mar- ket and to grow with our existing customers, we are in the process of replacing our cur- rent Phoenix corrugated products plant with a modern state-of-the-art facility,” said Tom Hassfurther, PCA Executive Vice President of Packaging, during the call. “Like many of our strategic projects, the Phoenix project improves the capacity, tech- nology and equipment in the plant gets us aligned properly in the right marketplaces ad- dresses the needs of our customers so that CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

Malnove plans to almost double the size of its Jacksonville packag- ing warehouse to 362,906 square feet in Imeson International Industri- al Park. The 171,925-square-foot warehouse addition is an investment the company says reflects its unwavering dedication to sustainability, efficiency, and staying at the forefront of industry advancements. “We are enthusiastic about the growth of the company and the in- dustry,” said Malnove President Dale Houck. Houck said the company will vacate warehouse space nearby when the lease expires at year-end 2025 and consolidate the activity at the main Malnove operation at northeast Canada Drive and Malnove Road. “We want to have this one by the end of next year,” he said. portunity to take care of the entire region. Over the past six years, Kowlzan said that they PCA has taken a lot of older plants that needed to be recapitalized and tripled and qua- drupled productivity with less costs and labor hours. Kowlzan also reported strong market conditions result- ing in PCA setting a new corrugated shipments-per-day re- cord for the month of June, up 9.2 percent over last year’s second quarter and total shipments. Containerboard pro- duction was 1.2 million tons and containerboard inventory was up 16,000 tons compared to the second quarter of 2023 and up 20,000 tons versus the first quarter of 2024. “We were also able to build some inventory ahead of what we expect to be a busy second half of the year. Packaging segment prices and mix moved higher from first quarter levels as we continue to implement our an- nounced price increases. Results also reflect our constant focus on minimizing inflationary cost increases through efficiency and usage initiatives and capital project bene- fits throughout our mills and converting facilities,” Kowlzan said. “Looking ahead as we move from the second and into the third quarter, prices and mix in both our Packag- ing and Paper segments will move higher as we continue to implement previously announced increases along with higher containerboard export prices,” Kowlzan said. PCA says it is the third largest producer of container- board products in North America. The company operates eight mills and 896 corrugated products plants and relat- ed facilities.

Foundation For Packaging Education Holds Napa Valley Fundraising Event

On July 16, 43 box makers, suppliers, friends, and spouses gathered for a reception at the Silverado Resort in Napa, California during the Foun- dation for Packaging Education’s second fundraising event in the heart of California wine country. The reception opened with wonderful food and a wide variety of wines, including those from Sanglier Cellars. This winery is a passion project of Jana Harris of Harris Packaging and her husband, Zach Camp- bell, who served as the sommelier for the evening. Day two saw about half the group tee off on the Silverado’s esteemed golf course, which hosts a PGA Tour event each year. The Foundation’s golfers lived up the course’s slogan, “the perfect game isn’t determined by your scorecard, but by where and who you play with.”

After a brunch, non-golfers made an excursion to the Culinary Insti- tute of America where they took a cooking class taught by professional chefs. The result of the class was a lunch prepared by the participants, which included starters, lamb, cod, duck, steak, sides, dessert, and, of course, wine. After just enough time to relax and perhaps nap, the Group was ready to eat again, this time dinner on the Napa Valley Wine Train. The line runs through the heart of wine country taking in breathtaking scenery, vine- yards, and vistas all while enjoying a three-course meal and, of course, wine. Day three began with brunch, followed by a tour and tasting at Cha- teau Montelena. It was this winery’s 1973 Chardonnay that stunned the world by winning the “Judgement of Paris” in 1976 where a California winery, for the first time, bested French wines in blind taste tests. This beautiful property was a great setting for enjoying several different vari- eties of their fine wines. Back on the bus, the group went to Beringer Brothers Winery, not- ed for being in continuous operation from 1876 until today, including through Prohibition, when the winery had permission to lawfully produce sacramental wines. The visit to this lovely property began with a wine welcome, followed by a delicious lunch, and then a tour and tasting in Beringer’s renowned Castle and cave-based cellars. Do you need printed sheets? We have your answer.. Introducing Heartland’s ColorCorr. This is “flexo-printing in the round”. On our corrugator we can print up to 109” wide. The advantage is that we can print the equivalent of ½ roll at a time and not be required to keep several rolls of very expensive preprinted paper on the floor. Much less waste and risk. In continual print mode, we use either laser-engraved rubber rolls or solid rubber rolls to print a “flood coat” or a repeating pattern. If we are printing a repeating pattern, we can run a two-color design on the paper. Customers have found that running sheets we print can allow them to run a lighter-grade due to reduced caliper loss, and in some cases eliminate one or more machine passes.

Kernic Systems Scrap System Installed At Norlands Box Co.

Burlington, Ontario based Kernic Systems announced the recent completion of the installation of a compact scrap recovery system for the new Norlands Box Company Cor- rugated Sheet Plant in Surrey, British Columbia. The compact, turn-key system is designed to handle scrap material from up to two production machines. This system includes a Höcker Polytechnik GmbH PMA rotary airlock material separator for the air conveyed trim scrap and also includes a manual baler loading conveyor with sweep plate for all of the plant's make-ready boxes, sheet waste, and other loose trim. The wide mouth baler/conveyor combination elimi- nates the need for a shredder, saving valuable air flow and allowing for a dust collector of reduced size, saving valuable floor space and cost. The Hocker Vacumobil used for the conveying air filtration in this application is a small footprint dust collector supplied with flameless explosion venting, fire suppression and inlet isolation gate. The Maren Engineering Corporation ProPAK60 hori- zontal full-eject baler makes dense, heavy, mill-size bales for maximum revenue. The feed conveyor with an angled sweep plate allows the operators to maintain the area more efficiently. CONTINUED ON PAGE 20
