A Note From Our Director Hello, everyone!
I hope you’re ready for a wonderful fall season! As you flip through this issue of The Connection, you’ll find plenty of exciting programs and events planned by our staff. More importantly, I hope you’ll be reminded of something we never want our community to forget: your public library is here for you through every season of life. Maybe you’re bringing your little one to storytime, looking for homework or research help, searching for a quiet place to study, joining a book club, learning something new, or simply looking for your next great read. Perhaps you need a computer, Wi-Fi, printing, or another service, or maybe you just want to browse the shelves and stay awhile. Whatever brings you through our doors, there is a place for you at your library. For some members of our community, that need may be more immediate. Our Information & Referral staff at the Main Library help connect community members with resources for food, clothing, shelter, rental assistance, and other basic needs. Sometimes, knowing where to start is the hardest part, and your library can be that starting place. With students of all ages heading back to school, fall is also the perfect time to rediscover everything your library has to offer. September is Library Card Sign Up Month, and if you don’t have a card, now is a great time to get one. A library card opens the door to books, digital materials, research tools, programs, technology, and resources throughout our library system. Already have a card? Encourage someone you know to get theirs, too. And while I have your attention, I have to invite you to one of my favorite nights of the year! On Saturday, October 24, beginning at 6:00 p.m., we’ll host our annual Library Gala, Into the Woods: A Grimm Affair. Step into the wonderfully dark and whimsical world of Grimm fairy tales for an evening of dinner, drinks, dancing, entertainment, and surprises. Come dressed in costume or cocktail attire and join us for a magical night. The Gala is our largest annual fundraiser, with proceeds supporting programs, equipment, furnishings, resources, and other needs throughout our library system. Tickets are on sale now, and sponsorship opportunities are still available. We’d love to see you there! There’s plenty to look forward to beyond this fall, too. Our Library of Things will continue to grow, with more opportunities to borrow items you might not expect to find at a library. We have some fun things coming! Finally, I hope you’ll remember that supporting your library doesn’t always mean making a donation. Using your library supports your library. Check out a book, attend a program, bring your child to storytime, download an eBook, become a Friend of the Library, or tell a neighbor about something we offer. Or simply stop by to say hello. Because at the end of the day, these libraries belong to you. We hope you’ll spend part of your fall with us. There is always a place for you at the Cabell County Public Library.
