The Whisky Explorer Magazine | Issue 1 - Fall 2023

With being invited for the launch I had no idea what to expect from their first release. Upon nosing the RyeLaw new make Spirit, it had loads of fruity notes with a tease of rye spice upon the finish which took me by surprise me as the fermentation time is only 50-60 hours. It was fresh and vibrant, just a very clean spirit. I expected a lot more cereal notes but there was actually only a slight scent and taste of maltiness as it opened up with some water. I left some of the new make in the glass and moved on to tasting the RyeLaw, I will admit it was not what I expected. I envisioned a more raw, earthy, peppered spice spirit but instead found a more fruit forward, butterscotch vanilla ice cream sundae on my first taste - for a moment I was perplexed as to where the rye spice was when all of a sudden it just creeped up on the back of my palate. The very slight earth and peppery note, with hints of banana, cinnamon toast crunch teased me and as I took my second sip it all came together and that is when I had my wow moment of how they created a new style that was malt forward with the tease of rye spice that evolves after each sip of RyeLaw. Commenting on the release of RyeLaw, industry veteran of 45+ years and InchDairnie Distillery Managing Director Ian Palmer, said: “We’ve been preparing for this day for well over a decade, and it is only now that we feel the quality of RyeLaw meets our exacting standards that we are putting it into bottles. And what a whisky it is... While we are rooted in Scotch whisky tradition, we have explored what is possible when agriculture meets industry and innovative technologies combine with methodology, to create a superb rye whisky that is sure to excite palates.” To be one of the first Canadians to taste RyeLaw was an incredible experience. Not only was I amongst some of the most respected whisky makers in the industry, but I also had the opportunity to taste and share RyeLaw with many of the top whisky writers and influencers at a global level.

And great news RyeLaw will have its official launch for Canada the week of October 22nd, 2023!
