NAVIGATING THE FUTURE TOGETHER THROUGH TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE AND INNOVATION

The panel discussion focussed on the opportunities and challenges that the future holds, and encouraged the institution’s alumni and current cohort of students to be proactive in their educational pursuit. Development Specialist Sizi Botsime spoke about the importance of developing and sharing best practices to ensure quality education. said “With international teacher-training, we bring teachers together in one space so they can share best practices with the hopes that they will attain inclusive education. We want the same education received by a learner in a private school to be received by a child in a rural area.” Botsime said they are intentional about working with marginalised communities and this training has been running for three years now. Their teacher trainings are held in the eastern Free State, QwaQwa as well as Morija in Lesotho. Success is using the skills and knowledge acquired to transform the lives of the people in our communities. Zanoxolo Mciteka from the Department of Social Development touched on facilitating sustainable development in a debilitating society. “Working as a community development professional means that I am at the lower end of the implementation of government policies. What the government decides to implement, I monitor whether these implementations speak to the people and if their needs are being met. I get to see issues facing our communities first hand such as unemployment and the racial and economic divide, etc.”
The event was held at the Auckland Park Kingsway campus. It was facilitated by Associate Professor in Industrial Psychology and People Management, Dr Musawenkosi Saurombe. The opening and welcome address was given by President of the Convocation Exco Mr Leslie Mpunzi. “With the new academic year in full swing, this event with illustrious alumni from our university will demonstrate the unity and shared purpose of our community,” he said. He was joined by panellists Sizi Botsime, an Education Activist and Training and Development Specialist; Community Development Practitioner, Mr Zanoxolo Mciteka of Department of Social Development; and Head of Department in the Academy of Computer Science and THE UNIVERSITY OF JOHANNESBURG (UJ) HELD ITS VIRTUAL CONVERSATION SERIES FOCUSSED ON ITS ALUMNI EARLIER THIS MONTH. THE PROPOSED TOPIC FOR THE DISCUSSION WAS CULTIVATING TOMORROW: NAVIGATING THE FUTURE TOGETHER.
