DEPARTMENT OF STRATEGIC COMMUNICATION: BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN AI AND TRADITIONAL COMMUNICATION
“What is great for us as a department and our qualifications, is that with a qualification in Strategic Communication, one is able to venture in different industries because you find that in businesses, PR and advertising agencies, Not-for-Profit and Non-governmental Organisation (NGO) spaces, the qualification is relevant and needed. In government it is needed, as well as in the education space. We cover stakeholder, and employee engagement and relationships, crisis management, internal and external communication, storytelling, campaign development and sustainability leadership.” Morapeli said people who hold a qualification in UJ’s Strategic Communication are able to broaden their horizons by occupying spaces such as advertising agencies and NGOs. They are also able to hold brand management and social media management positions in organisations.
The University of Johannesburg (UJ) through the various departments of the institution’s faculties, has ensured that course content in these departments stays ahead of the curve. One such department is the Department of Strategic Communication in the Faculty of Humanities. Speaking about the work being done by them was Ms Seriane Morapeli. She is a Lecturer in the Department who not only did her undergraduate degree in the Department of Strategic Communication, but her Honour’s and Master’s degrees as well. She is currently working on her PhD on school-based alcohol prevention interventions through it.
“STRATEGIC COMMUNICATION ENCOMPASSES ALL COMMUNICATION DISCIPLINES. IF YOU THINK OF ORGANISATIONAL COMMUNICATION, BUSINESS COMMUNICATION, POLITICAL AS WELL AS PUBLIC RELATIONS, WE ACT AS AN UMBRELLA FOR ALL OF THEM,” SAID MORAPELI.
