He shared that there are many facets to him which he continues to explore: “There’s me, the lawyer, there’s Bongani, the Pan-African scholar and then there’s my intellectual side, where I write and contribute to journals. I am also a spiritual person as I am a Minister of the Word. These various parts of me are all growing,” he said. His practice, Bongani Khanyile Attorneys, which he founded in 2015, represented leading corporate brands and conglomerates such as Cell C (Pty) Ltd where he provides corporate legal services. Idemia Group is an international company forwhom he has done work on the continent, including Kenya. Diplomat, an Israeli-based company, as well as the Public Servants Association (PSA) and a long list of notable individuals who are well-known in the Republic, including the likes of DJ Mo Flava, Tu Nokwe, Cornet Mamabolo, Baby Cele, Simba Marumo and DJ PH are among the long list of growing clients. He is a Director in the Employment Practice of Cowan-Harper Madikizela (CHM). In January 2024, he was honoured with the Top 25 Legal Rising Star Award in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in recognition of his sterling contribution to the legal field. On 18 and 19 April 2024, Luthuli is set to be honoured with the Top 25 Litigator Award in Dubai, in recognition of his oratory achievements and involvement in significant legal matters, resulting in a number of reported judgments under his name. The father of three is a contributing analyst for The Thinker Magazine, a Pan African thought leadership publication, which is edited by Dr Essop Pahad, his former political mentor. He publishes mainly on Labour Law and Industrial Relations. The accomplished attorney is a board member of Witkoppen Health and Welfare, Alberton Child Welfare (resigned in 2015), and the Bible League of Southern Africa, as well as Guild Cottage Children’s Treatment Centre. He already has been reported in Labour Litigation cases as winning counsel on a Restraint of Trade matter, as well as numerous Review Applications and a number of High Court cases ranging from evictions to interdicts. In 2021, Luthuli was the lead attorney in a landmark case, where he acted for the African Christian Democratic Party that led to the rollout of Ivermectin as medical intervention against the novel Covid-19 pandemic. Luthuli is a conference speaker who gets invited to be a panellist on labour issues. He is also a speaker at HR Laws conferences annually where he speaks on BCEA and LRA amendments, as well as the SASLAW Annual Conferences. He speaks regularly at continental events, including in Zimbabwe and also at international conferences in his capacity as a lawyer and an intellectual. He is fast becoming a name recognised and respected as an authority in the area of labour law and industrial relations. He has also been appointed as an Acting Judge of the Labour Court with effect from June 2024, by Office of the Acting Judge President of the Labour Court. While his work requires him to travel often, Luthuli said he always makes time for family and ensures to prioritise them. When asked what drives him, Luthuli believes that remaining humble is an important trait for one to have and to be passionate about what you do. “It is important to remain humble and remember where you come from. That way you make sure you are never too comfortable. It is not an easy road to take but you must remember why you started,” he said.
