Brand Africa, he has championed the role and opportunity of brands to transform the continent’s image and fortunes. His Brand Africa 100 | Africa’s Best Brands research and ranking of brands in Africa, that is published every May by African Business, is widely anticipated and the most quoted reference on brands in the continent. “Made in Africa Brands,” he said, “will help to transform and shape Africa’s entrepreneurial and innovative identity; help fastrack industrialisation; create jobs and a tax revenue base to fund public goods and reduce Africa’s debt.” In between he has trekked the rare silverback gorillas on the Virunga mountains in Rwanda and Uganda; summited Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Sinai, trekked the 116km long King

Moshoeshoe II Walk in Lesotho, rode the historic 52 hour TAZARA train that links Tanzania and Zambia, skydived in Swakopmund, Namibia; and jumped the 216m high Bloukrans Bridge bungee in South Africa, among his many breath-taking travels and adventures globally; whilst writing, teaching, speaking and being quoted across the world for his perspectives on any matters related to branding, intellectual property and travel in Africa. During the recent graduation season, UJ proudly bestowed an honorary doctoral degree upon Ikalafeng, acknowledging his remarkable leadership and societal impact. Expressing his gratitude, Ikalafeng reflected on the transformative journey of UJ and the continent it represents, highlighting the importance of progressive change and the power of education in shaping futures. He dedicated the honor to his mentors, upbringing, and the marketing industry, emphasizing Africa’s inherent excellence and creativity. Ikalafeng’s accolade exemplifies UJ’s commitment to excellence and innovation, inspiring future generations to strive for greatness. On being conferred with the honorary doctorate, Ikalafeng said he views the recognition from the institution as a nod to say ‘you’re on the right path.’ “I’m immensely honoured. I didn’t start this journey for the accolades, but I’m humbled that somehow I’ve made a difference,” he said.” Speaking about future plans, Ikalafeng shared that he will be launching a scholarship to get more students to focus on African brands. He is also working on his autobiography and book on inspiring an African brands’ revolution. “I have two journeys which people refer to my legacy: the first is brands and the other is African travel. I’ve gone on a purposeful journey to focus on African brands and a purposeful journey to showcase African destinations and I’ve done both in an authentic way.” His advice to those who aspire to follow his path? “Do something that matters but be authentic in all of that. Discover and pursue a passion that will fuel your purpose; surround yourself with people who are excited about what excites you; and find a place that
