LESSON 10 3. What do you remember about Artaxerxes, King of Persia? (Review Ezra 4:7–23.)
4. According to verse 10, what was Ezra’s threefold mission or purpose in re- turning to Jerusalem?
FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH
THE LAW OF MOSES “In these chapters the law of Moses receives prominent mention, as Ezra is a scribe “skilled” in that law. We learn first that this law comes from God: it is the “Law of Moses that the L ord , the God of Israel, had given” (Ezra 7:6). We learn that by this law God means to transform hearts and lives: Ezra had set his heart to study it, do it, and teach it in Israel. King Artaxerxes repeat- edly mentions the law and Ezra’s expertise in it, grasping its importance as a connection to Israel’s God—and its condemnation of those who do not obey it (7:26). What King Artaxerxes does not grasp is the law’s merciful revela- tion of God’s redemptive plan at work through God’s chosen people. As [we will see] chapter 8 closes with the returned exiles offering burnt offerings and sin offerings to God, as prescribed by the law, we glimpse the amaz- ing grace and mercy of the Word from God that opens a way for people to come to him and live.” 31
