FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH
WISDOM Wisdom is the ability to discern or judge what is true or right. It is not only the knowledge of facts, but also the ability to know when or how to use that information. In Ezra 7:25, King Artaxerxes appeals to “the wisdom of your God” as the source of Ezra’s wisdom in carrying out the king’s decree. Because Ezra was learned in the law and had a heart that sought to love the Lord, he knew the facts of what God’s commands were, and he knew how to apply the law to everyday life (including areas that might seem outside of religious matters, e.g. the appointment of magistrates and judges). As fol- lowers of Christ, we need to study God’s Word so that we know what it says. Moreover, we are instructed to apply it to our everyday lives. God wants us to know Him (relationship) and do what He says (obedience) so that we are blessed and He is glorified. Wisdom is a gift from God, and He invites us to ask Him for wisdom in all areas of our lives (James 1:5). 34
