LESSON 12
LESSON 12
THE PROVIDENCE OF GOD
I do not know why God does some things, but I am convinced that nothing is acci- dental in his universe. —A. W. Tozer
Because this theme of the providence of God is so powerful in our study, The Second Exodus, let’s take this lesson to dive deeply into this crucial doctrine.
The providence of God is a major, sometimes overlooked theme running through- out the metanarrative of Scripture. The word providence consists of the prefix, pro , meaning “in front of” or “before,” and the Latin root videre , “to see.” Providence means “to see beforehand.” However, from a theological standpoint, Providence means more than simply God’s foreknowledge. It refers specifically to God’s super- vision of and provision for the world based on His foresight. 36 God’s providence is related to His sovereignty. God’s sovereignty refers to His right and power to do all that He wills, while providence emphasizes His purposeful sov- ereign action. 37 Awareness of God’s providence is important so we can have godly insight into the realities of our daily lives. Furthermore, confidence in the provi- dence of God can give us comfort, joy, hope, and strength during even the most trying of circumstances.
