The Second Exodus - 26 Week

LESSON 15

FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH

PRIDE VS. HUMILITY Not all types of pride are bad, but sinful pride means to have exaggerated self-esteem. Proverbs 16:18 says, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” Why is this type of pride so destructive? It is attributing to yourself things that should be attributed only to God. “What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it” (1 Cor. 4:7)? Everything we have and everything we are, we have received from the Lord. He deserves all credit, honor, and glory. We do not. Humility has a posture that is low, contrite, and bent down before the Lord— which means to reflect a spirit of deference. Humility is recognizing God’s sovereign role in every part of our lives, and that apart from Him we have nothing. And here is the paradox: When we lower ourselves in humility, ex- alting God alone, then He lifts us up. Proverbs 22:4 states, “The reward for humility and fear of the L ord is riches and honor and life.” 47

5. We are often better at spotting pride in others than in ourselves. Where in your life are you battling the sin of pride in your thoughts, words, or actions?

Confess your struggle to the Lord and repent. Memorize and/or meditate on the verses from question 4 to help you in the battle you face.
