DAY 5

The Wall Completed (Nehemiah 6:10–19)

1. Read verses 10–14. What did Nehemiah discern about Shemaiah (consider 2 Chron. 26:18 and 20), and what did he say to God in verse 14?

FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH

FALSE PROPHETS False prophets are people who claim to be speaking the word of God but who spread false teachings or messages. They are delivering messages that originated in their own hearts and minds (Jer. 23:16). False prophets are also motivated by a self-interest and often speak their messages for financial gain as in Nehemiah 6:12–13. As believers, we need to be strong in our faith and knowledgeable about the truth so that we can spot false teachers and not be deceived. Knowing what a true prophet or teacher sounds like can help us recognize a false proph- et. A true prophet’s words will be fulfilled (Jer. 28:8–9), their teachings will be consistent with Scripture (2 Pet. 1:20–21), their teachings will encourage righteous behavior (Deut. 13:1–4), their life will reflect a divine call (Matt. 7:15–20), and they will acknowledge Jesus Christ as divine (1 John 4:1–6). 57

2. How can Christians identify a false prophet or teacher? Underline or highlight the words or phrases from the following verses that will help you be discerning.
