DAY 4
Israel Signs an Agreement to Reject Their Past Sinful Ways and Follow God and His Covenant Stipulations (Nehemiah 9:32–10:27)
1. Read Nehemiah 9:32–38. Instead of looking to the past, the Israelites’ prayer turned their attention to their present situation. What did they say in verses 36–37 and conclude in verse 38?
2. Why might this long list of names be included in 10:1–27? What might be important about who signed the agreement first and who signed in 10:9?
3. What role do you think the completed wall played in this revival?
FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH
REVIVAL Revival is a spiritual reawakening that is initiated by the Holy Spirit, and it involves a convicting awareness of sin, a renewed love for God, and an in- creased passion for His Word and the church. Believers who have allowed themselves to be distracted by the cares of the world might experience re- vival on a personal level and see closeness with God restored. But often we think about revival as a corporate event, in which many people experience this spiritual reawakening in the same period of time. As God has moved throughout history, there have been periods considered to be times of re- vival, when the Spirit has caused many people to come to or return to God in such numbers that the whole culture was affected. One such revival is re- corded in Nehemiah 9–10, where we see repentance prompted by the Word of God that leads to lasting change. 61
