LESSON 5 2. Read verses 4–5. What reminders from the past did God give His people, and why? (See also Ex. 14:13–14; Deut. 31:6–8.)
3. Identify one or more things that make you fearful. How has being reminded of God’s promises and presence changed your perspective?
4. What hope does God give to His people in verses 6–9?
Note: The questions Haggai asked the priests regarding the law (vv. 10–14) were meant to remind them how both ritual holiness and uncleanness were transmitted. According to the law, while impurity was contagious, holiness was not. 18 These questions were meant to illuminate the people’s sin for the previous 16 years. Though they had returned to the land and continued to make sacrifices on the altar—their sacrifices were defiled in God’s sight by their lack of obedience (Ps. 51:16–17).
5. What were the people to “consider from this day onward” (Hag. 2:15–19), and why?
