Who’s Gonna Drive You Home?

By Lynn Fredrick August 2025 My wife heard a song with a title similar to this ar- ticle’s title. She said it reminded her of some things I talk

the clouds, shining as lightning shines from east to west and we and all believ- ers in Jesus, go to be with Him forever. It is wonderful to have an earthly help mate, but ultimately, we all need help to get to our eternal home. As close and dedicated Terry and I are to each other we cannot get ourselves to our eternal destination. It is not something we can accomplish on our own. We need a Des- ignated Driver to get to our eternal des- tination, of which there are only two possibilities. Years ago, I remember watching a movie and when a man of evil reputation and character was passing away, a black hole opened in the floor and these creepy black moaning and growling creatures came crawling out and dragged him, screaming, down that hole to live an eternity in pain and agony in what the Bible calls the lake of fire. A life

about and I should write about some of them. The thought of getting home sure crosses your mind when you are a 2 ½ hour drive from home, 7 miles from a paved road, on a rugged fire lane in a wilderness area, your trans- mission goes out and you can’t get the 4-wheel drive truck out of first gear. Top end speed is about 10 mph. That’s not too bad on the fire lane but it sure caused road rage on the paved roads. It took 11 hours to get home instead of the 2 ½ .

gave the officers the money and, then, they wanted more. The rental agent had someone park the new rental car next to the damaged one and he distracted the officers with much more fluent Spanish than mine and got them into quite the argument. He had told me to grab Terry on the way by the jail cells, go out the back door, get our luggage into the new rental car and go. Several hours later as we neared the airport, we were praising God that no one had followed us. No doubt God was with us and a very kind and quick-thinking car rental agent had helped us get, at least part way, home. Have you ever been in a situation that you can not drive? I have. I have had hip replacement surgery, oral surgery and other pro- cedures where I have been sedated and I needed to have some- one drive me home. Every year I have a glaucoma check and my eyes are so dilated I am not able to drive. I could not drive for weeks after my hip replacement. I couldn’t even put my socks on! I am going to have a shirt made that the front will be printed, “MY WIFE IS THE REASON,” and the printing on the back will say, “THEY CALL ME LUCKY.” I am truly blessed to have Terry as my best friend and life companion. She is my driver when I can’t be, as I am hers when she can’t be. We are each other’s helper. If one of us falls the other picks them up. We stand back-to-back to defend against the enemy and our mutual faith in God and Jesus makes our relationship strong as a cord of three strands. (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12). Neither of us had ever had this experience, in a marriage, until we met each other 23 years ago. We both thank God for each other and the help we bring to each other. Neither of us want to ever be without the other. Our favorite evening place is on our back porch watching the sun go down. Often, I look at Terry and tell her I have been asking God that when the time comes for us

lived without God and Jesus will always end like the man in that movie. A scary and frightening reality that no one need face. How- ever, there is great news! “Praise be to the LORD, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens. Our God is a God who saves; from the sovereign LORD comes escape from death.” Psalm 68:19-20. I have heard it said, by Billy Graham, religion is “man’s attempt to reach God, Christianity is God’s attempt to reach man.” God, who made the rules, that sin separated man from Him and carried the penalty of death also knew that no man, or woman, could live a sin-free life, so He provided the way for forgiveness for sin. He sent His only, sin-free, Son to earth to demonstrate how His fol- lowers should live and demonstrated the depth of His love, for all mankind, by allowing Himself to take the punishment for breaking God’s laws, death. Jesus, the Christ, suffered the most gruesome execution known to man, flogging and crucifixion on a cross by professional, brutal, Roman executioners. He did that so you and I can receive forgiveness for our sins by believing and trusting in Jesus. His following (three days later) resurrection and 40 days later ascension to heaven qualifies Him as the only possible Des- ignated Driver that can get us to live an eternity in our heavenly home, which is described as a paradise and a place so spectac- ular, gold and other precious metals and jewels will be used as building construction material. Luke 23:43, Revelation 2:7, Rev- elation 21. How do you make Jesus your Designated Driver? Simple: ask Him to be. Admit your need, He knows your sins anyway, just admit them, ask for forgiveness and His help to steer your life away from your habitual sins through the power of His Holy Spirit that will come to live in you the moment you ask Him to be your Savior and Designated Driver of your life. The Holy Spirit is your seal and pass to eternal life in paradise with Jesus. In the meantime, your new Designated Driver has provided a road map to assist you in choosing roads through the mountains, wilderness and valleys of life. The Holy Bible. Study it and dis- cover new and better roads that will guide you until Jesus calls you home or when we all meet Him in the air and, together, go to paradise. Then a car hauler to take the irreparable truck to its final resting place, a salvage yard. But the old sentimental Tahoe got us home and a new, used, Yukon hauled the old girl to a resting place where she could help other vehicles live on. One other time my wife and I journeyed to a remote fishing vil- lage called Punta Allen on the Mexican Caribbean Sea, near Be- lize. On the way back, through many miles of a jungle road, we came to the first small village on paved roads, Tulum, where we were broadsided by a car with license plates that identified the driver as a political official. I looked at Terry and said, “we are in trouble.” She said “he hit us” and I responded, “it won’t matter.” I had been to Mexico many times and knew you don’t want an encounter with law enforcement, as many are corrupt and getting money from the tourist is the goal. Soon we were in the local jail undergoing interrogation. When they placed us next to men in dirt floor cells with no toilets and the government official was allowed to go, I was definitely thinking “who will get us home?” and I asked for a U.S Embassy repre- sentative. An hour later, he arrived but soon was nowhere to be found. Telling how the accident happened, through the embassy interpreter, did not matter. The whole scare tactic was working and soon the motive was emerging that they wanted money. I asked for the location of an ATM machine and on my way out the door, as they kept Terry captive, I pointed at the cross the officer in charge was wearing and told him that Jesus was my Savior too. I don’t know if that helped, but no officer accompanied me on the way to get $500.00 cash. I spotted a location of our same car rental agency and quickly told the rental agent our predicament. He knew what to do. He ordered a new car and went with me to talk with the officers. I

to go home to be with Him that He takes us at the same time. Very specifically, I have requested that the angels, Gabriel or Michael — the two guys whose high five hand slap was heard across the universe, when God created Terry. I’m quite sure one of them said that Lynn will be called “Lucky” after the two of them meet. About 75 feet from our porch is a pond. I have asked that area will be the landing strip for the chariot, when the time comes, and the driver motions and calls out, “come on let’s go home to be with Jesus!” The other request is that we see Jesus coming on
