S P O R T S NEW CHALLENGES FOR VANKLEEK HILL CURLING CHAMPIONS

With graduation behind them, the two veteran curlers now go their separate ways as each pursues her post-secondary goals. Lovitt heads for Laurentian University in Sudbury, in September, where she is enrolled in a Law and Justice studies program. She will continue to curl as part of Sudbury’s Team Croisier. “We played against them (Croisier) in the Canada Winter Games trials final,” Lovitt said, smiling as she recalled the hard-fought match. “They went on to become the Canada Winter Games champions.” Allen is putting her curling broom away, except maybe for an occasional funspiel match with friends if she has the chance. Her main focus now will be her farm manage- ment and technology studies at MacDonald College in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Québec. “It’s not a big curling community,” Allen
said, “and also I think I am going to be pretty busy with my courses. My program opens up many opportunities for me in the agriculture field.” She will look back on her curling days with Lovitt and other rink mates with fondness. Allen knows what she will miss the most, and it is not the honours and awards which she and her team have shared over the years. “It’s the game itself,” she said, “and the interaction with the players on my team, and with my friends in the curling community, whom I normally wouldn’t see.” Lovitt also looks back with a smile on her curling adventures with Allen. “I had a lot of fun, and I achieved a lot of personal goals,” she said. “It’s nice to have a break, until the next season. For now, I’m just going to enjoy the summer.”
It’s been a good season and a lot of fun in the past few years for Vankleek Hill’s champion curling duo, Caitlin Allen and Émilie Lovitt, but now it’s time for them to go their separate ways. “I’m missing it a little bit,” said Allen, with a little smile. “Yeah, I’m feeling a little bit of withdrawal.” Both Allen and Lovitt are now Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute (VCI) graduates as of last month. For several years they represented their school and their village at both, the provincial and national levels, in high school compe- titive curling and as the Vankleek Hill half of Team Vivier, a Navan/Vankleek Hill U18 girls competitive curling rink.
