Table of Contents Photo Ever wondered how your ride would handle confronted with a defensive driving situation? Maybe a sharp swerve to miss hitting something on the roadway, panic braking under stress, or even flat-out acceleration to avoid an accident are situations we rarely experience until it’s too late. NSRA Autocross Director Kevin Webb and AutoXperts Promotions coordinated 572 passes through the 42nd Mid- America autocross course in just two days for those with the need for speed and those who just wanted to get closer to their pride and joy.

AUGUST 2025 7
W hile getting to know our newly appointed NSRA Autocross Director, Kevin Webb, it became clear to me he was talking about an entire new viewpoint towards autocross than I had ever considered. If you’re like me, the focus was always how to go from Point A to Point B the fastest while navigating a twisting, turning racecourse laid out with orange safety cones. It never occurred to me the same racetrack could be used for the less daring that simply want- ed to see how their car reacts when placed in uncompromising situations. Switching the need-for- speed for the need-for-safety hooked me. Offering rodders a safe environment to test ‘at their own comfort level’ not only the performance and han- dling of their vehicle, but also the driver’s skills, ties perfectly into the free Safety Inspection opportuni- ties the National Street Rod Association has been delivering for over half a Century. I doubt the NSRA will ever offer opportunities for familiarizing enthusiasts with any of the plethora of 200mph street cars in today’s world (Where do they do that and how often?), but the NSRA can offer opportunities for members to learn what might happen if they encounter a situation while enjoying their favorite pastime, cruisin’ a vehicle they have deep feelings for. “BAMM,” out of nowhere an object appears in the path ahead. The list of possi- ble objects could fill volumes. Most drivers will either swerve and/or hit the brakes, or in some situ- ations they may need extreme acceleration to avoid hitting the object. We’ve just described the essence of NSRA Autocross. The popularity of autocross events over the past couple decades has elevated it to the point of pro- fessionalism, which happens in all forms of competi- tion. But the concept of getting to know your car better, whether a new car off the showroom floor, something you built or bought or an inheritance, getting to know its manners can be both safe and fun. I’d venture to say a vast majority of us have never put our cars through a ‘stress test’ or are fully confident how our car would react in an emer- gency. NSRA Autocross is the chance to take the time to find out and adjust and test those double- adjustable, multi-position shocks you installed or get comfortable with those big disc brakes at all four corners. It’s amazing to feel the improvement from a boxed and properly braced frame with enough stiff- ness to resist twisting from those high-performance The Last Frontier?
aftermarket front and rear anti-roll bars. After several ‘spirited’ turns on the course you might decide that stock bench seat covered in vinyl is a little slippery. Or you may simply find out your original stock shocks are shot! It seems there isn’t a single aspect of our 30-year- and-older cars and trucks that hasn’t been elevated to the highest levels of craftsmanship and technolo- gy using the most sophisticated methods and mate- rials worthy of world class refinement. From after- market chassis’ including brakes, steering, rims and tires to crate engines with horsepower to spare, we have access to it all. Fabrication, paint, upholstery, electrical components and accessory systems are at the top of the game. When talking about the variety of ways we all enjoy the vast, expanded world we call rodding, there are so many different perspectives and levels of builds there is room for everyone. We have noticed the younger generation rodders love cruising their street rods, street machines and trucks, but they also want something exciting to do with them. For many, street rods and muscle cars up into the early ‘70s (at this time) are being built to unattainable lev- els and they’re expensive so we see younger rodders bringing their hot rod visions and enjoying NSRA Autocross with whatever their project might be. It's great fun learning how to navigate an autocross course with your buddies and your first walk out into the middle of hundreds of orange cones will have you scratching your head. But, with your buddies help and after a couple passes, you’ll start finding your way around and then the fun begins. Each twist and turn offers the opportunity to test your brakes, steering responsiveness, body roll, tire grip and pedal-to-the-metal-acceleration in one quick maneuver on your way to the last frontier of any serious car build. In a way, after assembling your choice of performance parts, NSRA Autocross offers you a great opportunity to ‘test-and-tune’ your pride and joy in a safe and challenging environment. As this is being written, Kevin Webb and AutoXperts Promotions are getting set for three-full days of NSRA Autocross action at the 56th NSRA Street Rod Nationals and in this issue, you’ll see some of the action that happened at the 42nd Mid- America Nationals in late May.

Axle Blues Tom,
After reading your Curbside editorial in the latest June issue I learned about Louie Mayall’s broken axle incident on his ’33 Ford sedan while heading to the 48th Western Nationals. Reading about this incident and seeing the picture prompted me to let you know the same thing happened on my daughter’s ’34 Ford. One of the rear axles snapped off right at the bearing and as you can see, there was significant dam- age. Ted Terrones Via e-mail
Ted, I suppose there could be any number of reasons for an axle to break like this. Obviously metal fatigue or stress in some way could be the cause, and unless both
then it was welded with stitch welds jumping from one side to the other. It was interesting how much the heat affected the housing because in the early stages of welding, jumping from side-to-side the heat would bind up the cylinder ram. Jumping to the other side would free it up. This movement got less and less as more area was welded. By progressing slowly and checking often, the ram was spinning free at the end. The reason this is so important is if the third member bearings are not in perfect alignment with the axle bearings it will put constant pressure/stress on the axles and bearings. Another culprit could be the use of highly reversed rim offsets in conjunction with large tires that are transferring the higher torque loads of today’s more powerful engines. Combine this with wheel spacers and the additional leverage applied to the axle is greatly increased. One last consideration is if you are using one of the popular early Ford 9-inch rearends from the late ‘50s these parts are now nearly 70 years old. In that life span, the axle bearings and their retainer rings may have been excessively heated or beat upon during replacement causing unnoticed damage. After this discussion maybe we’ll hear back from some of our other readers who’ve experienced the ‘Axle Blues’ and their thoughts. I’m sure the incident was a surprise for both Louie and your daughter, but thankfully neither were injured.—ED
rodders were doing a little off roading but afraid to admit it, there are a few other reasons that come to mind. First, if these rearends were originally purchased from a salvage yard, or as a new ‘bare’ housing, bracketry work that required welding (even something as simple as shock brackets) to install the rearend may have warped the housing ever so slightly. I included a photo of the process I went through to narrow and add brackets to a rearend using an early Ford housing with tapered axle tubes mated to 9-inch Ford axle bearing retainers. I used a five-foot section of a hydraulic cylinder ram along with turned aluminum stock to fit over the ram and into the axle bearing retainers and the main differential carrier bearing bores inside the housing. This aligned everything and

NSRA Autocross 2025 42nd Mid-America Street Rod Nationals
By Kevin Webb NSRA Autocross Director
T he first NSRA Autocross event of 2025 was both fun and challenging for participants of the 42nd Mid-America Street Rod Nationals held May 23-25. The folks at AutoXperts Promotions LLC put on a great show, with a total of 572 runs around the course over two days of competition. Friday had lots of first- time drivers, including Kailey Waggoner with her 2024 Toyota Corolla GR six-speed! The folks at AutoXperts provided ride-alongs and timing for the event, with Ron Schoch and Dan Koch show- ing everyone how to run a fast, but safe, lap cocooned in a loaner helmet from Simpson Racing Products. Even NSRA photographer Louie Mayall tried a lap in his ‘33 Ford roadster he drove all the way from California, and he was surprised how much fun Autocross was! All the runs at this year’s event were very competitive between the drivers, with times consistent both Friday and Saturday. The rain Saturday morning washed off the track, and by noon we were run- ning again, with the grandstands showing more spectators than ever. The NSRA Autocross ‘shoot-out’ required the two fastest drivers in each of the five classes to go head-to-head, each running two laps with the
combined fastest time being the winner. In the 1908-63 class Harvey Perry in his ‘32 Ford Vickie was required to do two perfect runs without hit- ting any cones to win his class. Heading up in the years, in the 1964-95 class Rick Holden and his ‘68 Camaro went against Leif Petterson and his ‘77 Datsun 208Z with Rick grabbing the win. In the 1996 and newer class the win went to Pierson Brashears in his ‘97 Honda Civic. Brian Busbea in his ’92 Chevy pickup ousted Ian Langner and his ‘51 Chevy 3100 in the Truck class. The Women’s class was one of the most competitive with Kailey Waggoner and her ‘24 Toyota against Janetta Slayton in her ‘99 Corvette. Both drivers, going into the finals, were within .300 of a second apart, but Janetta ran the faster time and clinched the win. Our friends with the Springfield Police Department even joined in on the fun, visiting the track and making a few runs themselves. A word to the wise, don’t try to outrun a certain female officer, she was fast! The NSRA thanks our spon- sors, Gateway Classic Cars, Ridetech, and Simpson Racing Products, for helping the NSRA and AutoXperts bring high performance driving, for safety and fun, to thousands of new enthusiasts.

I n the early 1990s, Ford moved away from its decades-old, small-block pushrod V-8 engine designs and introduced a new “mod- ular” overhead-cam (OHC) V-8 engine, which was the 4.6L V-8. This design was used in all of Ford’s V-8 applications—from F-150 trucks to Mustangs and Crown Victorias. After 20 years of the 4.6L engine it was once again time for a major update, and the Coyote V-8 engine was introduced for the 2011 model year. While more evolutionary than revolu- tionary, displacement was increased from 4.6L to 5.0L, and every part of the engine was improved with mod- ern technology. The Coyote engine is simply better and more powerful than its predecessors. Now, the Coyote engine is nearly 15 years old. While they are very durable engines, the older units have accumulated a significant number of miles and are starting to wear out. In “Ford Coyote Engines: How to Rebuild,” industry veteran Jim Smart takes you through all of the steps to return your Coyote engine to like-new condition. Heads, cams, the valvetrain, rotating assemblies, engine blocks, machining, break-in, and tuning are all covered. In addi- tion, Smart provides an in-depth history of the four different
Coyote engine generations and provides expert knowledge about planning your build, parts selection, and the engine math that is required to make the best rebuild decisions. Whether you want to do your own rebuild or farm it out to a professional (as an informed customer), this book provides all the knowledge you need to return your Coyote engine to its former glory. The 8 1/2 x 11-inch, 152-page soft bound book features 365 color photos and charts. OFFICIAL SPONSORS
NSRA would like to thank the following companies for supporting the 2025 NSRA Divisional Events
I knew the very first moment I saw Harvey Perry’s ’32 Ford Tudor sedan that it was going to win a lot of awards. The rod is bright, M&M Orange bright, has all the cool stuff, is well put together, and Harvey lives within driving range of a lot of NSRA shows (Alexander, Arkansas). Imagine my sur- prise when Harvey came cruising into the fair- grounds at the Western Nationals. A little sniffing around and I found out he came to help in the Safety Inspection lanes because NSRA was short. I probably should have shot a feature of the rod then, but there are a lot of cool ’32 Ford sedans out in the world and it’s hard to single one out. Harvey was also at the Mid-America Street Rod Nationals,
and I was admiring the rod as he drove by in full sun, but then the sun went away (the weather was unsettled) and the car still glowed. I decided given the scary weather forecast, this was a car I could photograph in sun or rain, and it sounded like a great idea. Harvey bought the ’32 just before he retired and moved to Arkansas, and he wanted to build one last ride while in retirement. He started out by boxing the chassis and slipping in tubular cross- members. The front suspension is a tubular IFS (Mustang II based) with stainless A-arms, Aldan coilovers, Flaming River Omni rack and pinion steering, and big Wilwood brakes. The rear sus-

pension is a GM 10-bolt controlled by a stainless four-bar, riding on Aldan coilovers, and drum brakes actuated by a dual master cylinder. It may not look like it at first glance, but power comes from an LS3 powerplant wearing Sniper direct-port induction (shared plenum), running a Stage II cam, a Texas Speed oil pump and pan, Hooker headers, and a 4L60E electric automatic overdrive tranny. The chas- sis is rounded out with a set of 15-inch American Torq Thrusts wearing BFG rubber. Harvey went with a look that many people would consider stock, but really there is quite a bit going
on to achieve that look. The headlight bar is dropped, the grille has been filled, the four-piece hood was retained now with hot rod louvers, the cowl filled, the roof filled, it’s chopped 3 inches, the windshield is flush mounted, Swan mirrors were installed, and the spare tire was removed. Everything was then delivered to Jim Sullivan of Drop-it Conversions who laid down the custom mixed PPG Orange over a white base (base makes all the difference). Harvey filled the interior with Vintage Air, Bowen Fabrics seats, Memphis Stereo, Stewart Warner gauges, an IDIDIT column topped with a Banjo wheel, Juliano seatbelts, and Ron Francis wiring. Jerry Mann Interiors stitched Finesse
Mustard leather and laid down the tan German square-weave carpeting. As an addition to his desire to build one last ride, he mentioned that every project seems to get harder and harder now that he’s older. As we all know, everything seems to get harder and harder the older we get, but we have learned that doing it right is the only way to do it. So maybe it’s not actually that much harder, but we are doing a much better job. Doing it right the first time always takes longer and is usually harder to do but even though Harvey says this is his last car, with all the accolades and smiles he gets driving his ’32 it makes me think he may have a new gig in retirement.

T he highways and streets around Springfield, Missouri, came alive the morning of Friday, May 23, as the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds opened the gates for the 42nd Mid-America Street Rod Nationals. Rumbling works of passion, love and talent rolled in and the following three days were a showcase of fantastic cars and enthusiastic owners and spectators enjoying 30-year-and-older works of automobile art. Participants registered for the event at the Host Double Tree Hotel with the help of Lynn Adams, Sheri Vaughn, Sandy Kerr, Lollie Krogmeier and Melinda Johnson, along with Host Club, the Pharoahs Car Club, and volunteers from the Springfield CVB. To show off some of the local talent Bret Chrismer led those interested to VL Classics in Springfield where the opportunity to buy the classic car of your dreams exists, and Rust2Rodz down the road in Marshfield fulfilling others’ dreams. The Battlefield Mall was just a short bus ride away for others who dreamed of shopping. “All Couped Up Hot Rods” was in the limelight as the “Spotlight Builder” for this year’s event.

Something for Everyone
NSRA Autocross kept participants and spectators busy during ‘dry’ spells, and Kevin Webb along with AutoXperts Promotions had a great event so be sure to check out the coverage on pages 16 and 17 of this issue. At the same time the “Slow Race” winner was James Thomas from Little Rock, Arkansas, in his faded green ’70 Chevy C10. Bethany Coppedge, aka Iona Belair, hosted the Pin-Up Contest crown- ing ‘Miss Poppy Foxglove,’ Brenna Castor from Leavenworth, Kansas, as “Miss Mid-America.” Kent Williams coordinated the Swap Meet full of rare parts and Linda Schmoranz set up shopping options in Women’s World. Renee Kaulfuss hosted 119 ladies who enjoyed entertainment and visiting at the Ladies Tea sponsored by Sanderson Headers and the Springfield CVB. Jane Linn coordinated a display of quilts with Donna Oliver from Denver, Colorado, coming out the winner. Walt Kruger, Kerby Moon, Wally Burchill and Punkin Johnson coordinated and set up the Streets of Rods areas. As always at any NSRA event the Safety Inspection Team was on hand and they examined 96 vehicles during the show, passing 80 of them and placing Safety 23 stickers on 67 of those. On Sunday morning “4 Calvary” entertained and thanked the Lord for our blessings and then the awards were announced, ending a beautiful three-day weekend. The 43rd Mid-America Street Rod Nationals is scheduled for May 22-24, 2026, for another Memorial Day weekend of “Fun With Cars.”
AUGUST 2025 39
Harvey Perry has been enjoying the heck out of his fresh ’32 Ford sedan out of Alexander, AR, driv- ing it everywhere includ- ing the West Coast this year. We love the M&M Orange paint and snagged the duo for a “StreetScene Pick” in Springfield.
Rodney Meek cruised in from Topeka, KS, behind the wheel of his too cool ’40 Ford COE running a Ford 302ci powerplant, a Heidt’s Mustang II IFS, a Heidt’s IRS, a Ford semi-cab with a 1-ton bed, and a tan interior with orange highlights.
Our friends at Alumicraft Street Rod Grilles liked Don & Cathy Pfitzinger’s ’30 Ford sedan from Sunset Hills, MO, for a “Pros’ Pick.” The hammered Tudor runs a TCI frame with a tubu- lar IFS, a 406ci Dart-based SBC backed up with a 200 4R, and PPG Black with airbrushed flames.
40 AUGUST 2025
Ted Burleson out of Alton, IL, built his ’49 Mercury custom using the full frame from an ’80 Buick, Chevy Corvette LT1 power with a 700R4, steelies with Olds caps, a molded ’54 Chevy grille, a 3-inch chop, Kaiser bumpers, and House of Kolor Candy Brandywine paint.
We dig on the extra long hood that Peggy Webb from Cherokee Village, AR, slipped on her ’26 Ford coupe to accommodate the 292ci inline six. In addition to the extra 10 inches in the hood, the cab has an extra 4 inches, everything is painted Metallic
Cobalt Blue, and she rolls on Billet Specialties Salt Flat-style wheels.
We love the hot rodded survivor vibe of Gerald Hardy’s (aka Slick’s) ’50 GMC pick- up from Haughton, LA, that has the origi- nal paint (re-clear coated), a gray leather interior, a FatMan frame with AirRide, and 6-liter LS power with a 4L80E tranny.
AUGUST 2025 41
We loved James & Wanda Hallman’s ’55 International out of Benton, AR, the first time we saw it. Sweet battleship gray hues, a beautiful burgundy leather inte- rior, an injected LS, and those oddly attractive IH utilitarian stylings got the hauler a “Rep/Safety Pick” in Springfield.
Mike Meeker out of Fair Grove, MO, helps NSRA out at the gate early in the mornings and also helps all the rodders of the Springfield area get their cars on the road. He has tons of cool rods, but we happened to get a shot of his super simple, but we love it, ’71 Chevy C10 cruising around survivor style.
Franchot & Rae Duncan came out from Derby, KS, in their “Forty’s Forever” award-winning ’40 Chevrolet sedan that has LS1 power from a Pontiac GTO, a Mustang II IFS on a stock frame, Nitto-wrapped Intro wheels, frenched headlights, a 5-inch chop, and Silver Ice Metallic GM paint by DuPont.
