YEAR 6 PROGRAM SEMESTER ONE
ENGLISH Students are learning to critically analyse a variety of texts and use evidence to support inferences and opinions. They are exposed to the reading strategies of thinking within the text, thinking beyond the text and thinking about the text. Students engage in creative writing that allows them to investigate how vocabulary choices and poetic devices can influence imagery, emotion and opinion. Students demonstrate their knowledge of spoken language features such as pace, pitch and pronunciation to enhance meaning as they plan, rehearse and reflect on their presentations.
MATHEMATICS
In Year 6 Mathematics across Semester 1, students will be engaged in activities to develop their skills in place value, learning about decimal values of thousandths and beyond while learning to divide and multiply whole numbers by decimals. They will use their place value skills to develop financial budgets, while looking at discounts of 10, 25 and 50 percent with their financial plans. They will also use all four operations to solve problems. In measurement and Geometry students relate decimals to the metric system and choose appropriate units of measurement to perform a calculation. They solve problems involving time, length and area, and make connections between capacity and volume. In Statistics and Probability, students interpret and compare a variety of data displays, including displays for two categorical variables. They will also analyse and evaluate data from secondary sources.
