From Gloom to G ladness- Through Death to Life By J. H. SAMMIS E XC E P T A CORN OF WH E A T FALL INTO T H E GROUND AND DIE, IT AB I DETH ALONE : BUT IF IT DIE, IT BR I NGETH FORTH MUCH FRUI T.— J OHN 12:24. O GOD !-SO God!’ in vain we cry ; In Earth, or Air, or silent Sky There is no God; no Strong and Just,— Jesus lies stricken in the dust!
Jesus, unsullied Innocence! Jesus, unselfed Benevolence; Jesus, we deemed Omnipotence; He who with one resistless word Subdued the Galilean deep;
Whose dreaded Voice hell’s legions heard Hurled howling down Gadara’s steep; Whose Sovereign touch made lepers whole; And who, God’s sole prerogative, Recalled the disembodied soul, And said to sinners, “ I forgive.”— Jesus lies dead in Joseph’s cave; He saved,—Himself He cannot save! They hanged him on the accursed tree! let us seek the cavern where ■In myrrh and .aloe low we laid Him ; And perish in our dark despair, Hopeless as he whose hate betrayed Him. * I ' hey sought thé place where Jesus lay; A The morning dawned,—and it was day. They met, in all His wonted grace, Their Risen Master, face to face! “ /"'\ god !” no more we cry in vain; Faith, Hope and Love are risen again; Dur Father’s ways, misunderstood, Are wise, and holy, just and good. The precious grain must needs be sown In hope, lest it abide alone. Oh, Crime without a parallel: And we had trusted it was He Who should deliver Israel,.
Beyond the grave the glory lies, And all the crowning ministries,
Dedicate to Thomas Hannay, Jr., from whom we expected much and now hope the more.
