were •made by Mr. Harfy Hill, President of the Fisherman’s Club, of which Mr. Hannay was a member; Mr. Hale, General Secretary of the Y. M. C. A., of Riverside, with whom Mr. Hannay was associated for a season in work for young men; and Mr. J. P. Welles, ex-President of the State En-. deavor, who spoke for that organization of the loyal and efficient service Mr. Hannay had rendered as Field Secretary. Super intendent Horton told of the happy rela tion existing for so long a time between Mr. Hannay and the Bible Institute. Pro fessor Peckham, with the Endeavor Chorus, sang “The Homeland.” The Scriptures were read by Mr. Arthur Gatter, President of the Endeavor Veteran Association, and prayer was offered by Dr. Pinkerton, Pres ident of the Church Federation. The large audience present was profoundly impressed and there were life offerings made for Africa. between God and man, the man Christ Jesus.” So after hearing John 1 :12 as an invitation from God, he‘ said, thoughtfully, “ Yes, I can believe that and I will take Christ. I believe that I am saved.” While giving him other Scripture bearing on as surance, like John 5:24, he said, as waking up from a long dream, that some time in Italy he had a book and that he remember ed reading the two passages in it. “ It comes to me that is exactly what I read there in that book.’:. From his description it must have been a Testament or a Bible, the reading of which God used in bringing him out clearly into the light of the Gospel. “ I can believe that,” he said, “but the other is a lie.” He gladly took the literature given him and as the worker left him, “ I believe that” rang in his ears. Entertained by President Stewart. P r e sid e n t L y m a n S t e w a r t gave a re ception at his home to the registered stu dents on the evening of February the tenth. His spacious home was crowded with the officers, invited guests and students. The students furnished the music and recita tions, and the evening was heartily enjoyed by all. Before saying good-night to the host and his daughters, we all gathered at the table of the Lord and remembered Him, who by body broken and blood shed had made possible so happy an occasion. A Memorial Service. A M e m o r ia l S ervice , in memory of our beloved Tom Hannay, was held in Imman uel Presbyterian Church on Sunday after noon, February fifteenth. Dr. R. A. Tor- rey, President o f the Africa Inland Mis sion, under whose auspices Mr. Hannay went to Africa, presided. Short addresses I t w a s on the palatial S. S. “ Congress,” in the steerage, that a young man ready to go to sleep was found to be the only person present. With help from God and with tact this lad was asked if he was saved, after giving him a Gospel and tract in Spanish. “I don’t believe in the Church nor the priest. They are not true. I found them out in Italy, I don’t want your book lets. I am done with them. Good night!” He turned over in bed and there the worker stood. “ I will leave you, but let me say I don’t believe in them either. The Ro man church and the priests never saved me, but Christ alone did.” Contrary to my rule never to lift up the error of the Ro man church, but to lift up Christ, I said this. He was Open to the Word then and with interest heard from the story of the palsied man, that God only had-power to forgive sin. “ There is no purgatory then, either, is there?’’ he asked. Slowly' but surely he saw the error of the church and priests as “mediators” when the Scripture showed him there wds only “one mediator
