On July 1, you’ll want to think twice before reaching for your cell phone in Georgia. It’s already illegal to text and drive, but with this new law in place, it will be illegal to even hold your phone while driving. This July, the bill that Governor Nathan Deal recently signed will go into effect, making it illegal to be in possession of your phone if you are driving. WHAT DOES THIS NEW LAW MEAN FOR YOU? Avoid making a call, sending a text, or having your phone near you while you are driving. This may include using GPS if it means you are interacting with your phone. The new law will likely lead to more traffic stops, so it’s important that you know and follow the rules. Even if you are not making a call, but the phone is in your hand, authorities may find reason to stop you. As officer Lt. Scott Davis told a news station, “The law, as it’s written now, just the mere possession in your hands is considered a distraction, and we’ll be making cases on that … The whole state of Georgia law enforcement in general will be making that case.” KEEP YOUR PHONE OUT OF REACH. What’s one way to make it easier to avoid your phone? Turn it on silent when you are driving. To make it even more difficult to pick up, put your phone in the back seat of your car, where it’s out of reach.
