NEWS FROM SUMO SAM April 2021 QuickSumoPestControl.com
Hello, everyone. I hope this newsletter finds you and yours well. While my brother, Josh, has introduced me before in the newsletter, I haven’t gotten a chance to introduce myself personally. I’m Jordan, the president of EcoArmor and QuickSumo Pest Control, and I thought I’d share a little bit about why now — more than ever — I’ve fallen in love with the work we do. I was in the Marine Corps from 2009 to 2013, and, after getting out, I needed new work. My oldest brother called me and asked if I’d help him out. So, I moved from California to Texas, and I got a job with QuickSumo in 2014. Pest control isn’t exactly the line of work I would’ve planned on doing, but it became meaningful in a way I never expected. It’s fun to get to know my clients and their families, and their trust in me means a lot, both professionally and personally. I take our commitment to entering their property and home very seriously, and it’s maybe a little surprising just how rewarding that’s been for me and my team. For one client and his family, all their kids know me. Their young daughter calls me “Mr. Jordan,” and used to show me gymnastic tricks she learned at school when she was 5. Now, she’s 8, and points out, “That’s where Mommy says the spiders are coming from!” It brightens our day for sure! Working with my brothers, Josh and John, has also been a huge blessing (and just a lot of fun!). People talk about how going into business with your family can set you apart, but, for us, it’s brought us closer. My oldest brother, Josh, and I have a 16-year age difference, and he got married at 21 years old. Since he was out of the house when I was 5 years old, I never got to know him that well. Nowadays, we try to go out once or twice a week. MY FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB Meet EcoArmor and QuickSumo’s President, Jordan Hopewell
Eventually, my wife became pregnant with our first daughter. With some inspiration from my older brothers, I
decided to start my own business to help create a business model that would
suit my needs as a new father. It was a pest control company called EcoArmor, and that went great! A good number of you used to be my clients at EcoArmor.
After a few years, I decided to merge EcoArmor with QuickSumo and join my brothers in managing their businesses. Even then, I still make it out to our clients’ property whenever I can because it’s my favorite part of the job. (Our whole team’s favorite part, really!) Although I didn’t expect my journey to follow this path, I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to continue serving you and your family. Stay safe out there — we look forward to seeing you again soon.

DON’T THINK — JUST GO GREEN!
3 Easy Ways to Reduce Your Impact on the Environment
Living a sustainable, zero-waste lifestyle is all the rage these days. Celebrities like Mark Ruffalo, Jessica Alba, and Emma Watson continue to make big waves by supporting eco-conscious causes and by boasting their eco-friendly products. Not everyone has the budget or the ability to go as eco-friendly as our celebrity counterparts, but “going green” isn’t as difficult as you may think. This Earth Day, try adapting some of these easy eco-friendly tips into your daily life! REDUCE YOUR RELIANCE ON SINGLE-USE ITEMS. Swap out items like paper towels, plastic water bottles, shampoos and conditioners, straws, plastic bags, and other single-use products that fulfill a need for you once and then end up in a landfill. Instead, find creative ways to avoid these single-use products. You can cut up old shirts to use as rags, fill up reusable water bottles instead of buying throwaway plastic ones, and use cloth bags instead of plastic sacks at the grocery store. If you’re looking for new products, consider shampoo bars or refillable bottles for hair care products from companies like Plaine Products or EcoRoots. EAT LESS MEAT. We’re not saying you have to give up your cheeseburgers or ribs, but opting for fewer meat-focused meals could create big impacts on a global scale.
According to the Center for a Livable Future, if just 32% of Americans opted for meatless meals one day each week, it would be equivalent to reducing the impact of emissions from 1.6 million cars each year. Swap meat for beans, tofu, cauliflower, squashes, or a vegetarian soup. Delish.com has a great selection of vegetarian-based meals if you’re ready to start.
SHOP LOCALLY. When you venture into “Meatless Monday” or search for products that reduce your single-use footprint, consider shopping locally. According to Transport & Environment, shipping could contribute to 10% of all carbon emissions by 2050. One way you can help reduce the reliance on global shipping is by focusing on locally sourced products and foods. Shop for produce at the local farmer’s market, seek out local crafters for gifts, and buy your clothes from local retailers who purchased the materials locally. Large store chains can also have local sections that make this endeavor easier! To get started, check with your local chamber of commerce for a list of shops to visit.
NONINVASIVE ANIMALS THAT HELP ELIMINATE PESTS FROM YOUR PROPERTY
THANKS, FOOD CHAIN!
The circle of life can serve as one of the most effective pest control strategies there is. Why not put it to good use and invite some noninvasive and harmless critters into your yard? Here are just a few creatures that could help you with pest control. NO. 1: CATS Aside from being endearing pets, cats are excellent hunters that gain their skills on instinct. They are carnivorous by nature, which makes it useful when you want to get rid of rodents and other small animals that threaten your property. Cats have always been effective pest control agents, so you might as well drop by your local shelter and adopt one. NO. 2: DOGS With their excellent sense of smell, dogs can sniff out even the tiniest of pests like bed bugs or carpet beetles. Although dogs require time and effort to take care of, they are willing to help you out in more ways than one. Their uses range from keeping pests out of your home to guarding your house from intruders. They’re also very lovable companions that could give you affection for years to come.
might want to invite some harmless little frogs into your yard, especially if you have an insect problem. Insects are a frog’s natural prey, so having some of these amphibians around could curb the population of pests such as mosquitoes, crickets, and others bugs. NO. 4: FISH Like frogs, fish do well in curbing the insect population flying around near a body of water such as a pond. Fish can feed on mosquito larvae and other pests that lay their eggs in water. They’re great not only for aesthetics, but also for keeping the number of insects down as well. NO. 5: SNAKES If you’re not easily spooked out, you may want to introduce some harmless, non-venomous snakes into your yard. Black rat snakes and garter snakes are rather docile reptiles that rely on constriction instead of venom to neutralize their prey. They’re great for keeping rodents out, and they leave almost zero trace of their own carnage. While they can’t eradicate pests right away, these animals can be a long-term solution to a growing pest problem. You just need to make sure that they’re not invasive to the local ecosystem, and you’re good to go!
NO. 3: FROGS Do you live near a body of water? Perhaps you even have a small pond nearby. If so, you

I f you’re looking for a new way to shake up your year, consider doing a random act of kindness in the April Fools’ Day spirit! There are so many ways we can contribute to our community and look after our loved ones — here are five ways you can pleasantly surprise others. NO. 1: TELL THEM TO LOOK OUT FOR AN ACCIDENTAL PACKAGE, THEN SEND THEM FREE FOOD INSTEAD. This works great if you’ve mailed anything to them before and know a bit about their routine (aka when it’s most convenient for them to be home). You can say that your auto-fill mysteriously replaced the blanks with their address instead of yours, and that they should be home to expect a package you accidentally sent to their residence. Then, use DoorDash or another food delivery app to send them a free meal instead! PRANKS GONE GOOD 5 Ideas for Heartwarming, Unexpected Acts of Kindness
NO. 2: MAKE A DOUBLE-BATCH OF THEIR FAVORITE COOKIES.
ARBOR ARIES
CHOCOLATE DAISY DIAMOND ENVIRONMENT
GARDEN KITE
First, contact them asking for help. The task? Finishing off a batch of their favorite baked treats. They have no need to be shy — you secretly had them in mind!
BASEBALL CHERRIES
RAINBOW SHOWERS
NO. 3: WRITE A ‘SECRET’ LETTER FOR THE NEXT TIME YOU MEET A FRIEND.
SPRING VEGETABLE AND CHICKEN PASTA BAKE
As adults, there are many people in our lives whom we might only see in person once or twice a year — and possibly longer than that during this past year of quarantine. Plan a casual get-together, but, this time, you have a secret gift: a letter expressing your gratitude for their

presence in your life, or any other kind thoughts about them that matter most to you. It can be short or long! Life is temporary, and you never know what your thoughts might mean to them. NO. 4: COLLABORATE WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY TO MAKE A KIND GESTURE. Surprise parties are the ultimate prank out of kindness, but we don’t need to plan a party to plan other surprises for loved ones. You can make a video collage of birthday wishes from all of your friends and family, created by their own submissions. You could also pool money to order unique gifts, like a picture and/or text-customized blanket from Shutterfly. NO. 5: SEND THEM A FUNNY GIFT ONCE IN A WHILE. Create an inside joke by sending them silly or amusing gifts once in a while. Do they like elephants or owls? Send elephant-themed coasters, owl bookends, or something else that’ll put a surprised smile on their face.

MORE THAN 100 YEARS OF NONALCOHOLIC BEER
You may not be surprised to learn that the U.S. has a holiday devoted to a
It was illegal to sell, transport, or consume alcoholic beverages, which were defined as any drink with more than 0.5% ABV. Beer with less than 0.5% ABV was considered nonalcoholic and could be consumed, if not enjoyed, by teetotalers. That standard has informed a new and growing wave of NA beer in the U.S., which pulled in about $100 million in 2018. Sales of NA beer worldwide, however, are projected to jump to almost $6 billion by 2023. In 2018 and 2019, sales of domestic beer decreased, fueled by a generational shift in drinking habits. Millennials drink less than their Gen Z and baby boomer counterparts, and periods of giving up booze, like Sober October and Dry January, are becoming more popular in general. Brewers — foreign, domestic, small, and large — are getting in on the growing trend by expanding NA offerings and experimenting with alcohol- free brews from easy-drinking lagers and ales to flavor-filled India pale ales. Heineken released its first NA beer in 2019 and competitor Budweiser answered with its own version a year later. Craft breweries across the U.S. have flagship and seasonal NA offerings, and in 2015, Bravas, located in Newport Beach, California, became the nation’s first brewery producing exclusively NA beers.
certain frothy brew — April 7 is National Beer Day — though you may be surprised that more and more Americans are celebrating with a nonalcoholic (NA) pint. The hoppy holiday is a relatively recent creation, but brewed concoctions have a long history, even those of a nonalcoholic variety. In fact, NA beer has been around since medieval times in Europe when very weak fermented brews were said to be less dangerous to drink than potentially contaminated water. Some even viewed the beer as a healthy alternative to water, and since they had very little alcohol by volume (ABV), laborers could drink them while they worked.
In the U.S., the 100-year history of NA beer is closely linked to the temperance movement, which began in the late 1800s. This led to Prohibition and the adoption of the 18th Amendment in 1919.
If you want to see what all the buzz is about without getting buzzed, crack open an NA beer from your favorite local bottle shop.
