From Dentist and Assistant To Husband and Wife
February 2019
Like all good dental love stories, mine begins at a practice. It’s hard to believe I first met my wife, Joanne (Jo for short), some 25 years ago while doing what we still do today. I was working for another practice at the time, and she was an assistant there. I guess we must’ve developed some serious chair-side chemistry, because we’ve been together ever since. In honor of Valentine’s Day, I want to take a moment to pay tribute to Jo. Some people may regard working alongside your spouse as a recipe for disaster, but our experience has been the opposite. Jo and I trust each other deeply and implicitly. We communicate with ease and are always on the same page. Sometimes, it feels like we’re doing a synchronized swimming routine because our movements are so seamless. Call it the dental version of completing each other’s sentences. Over the years, we’ve established a few ground rules that make working together a joy. The biggest one is that we never let issues from home show up at the practice. It actually makes our marital spats — everyone has them, right? — resolve quicker. Whatever we’re squabbling about at home, the fun we have working together always manages to make us smile. In turn, we also try to never bring work matters home. While I’m pretty good about keeping particular issues at the office, dentistry is something that never leaves my mind. I’m a nerd for this stuff, and Jo is incredibly gracious about my never-ending fervor for reading, learning, and talking about dentistry. The same goes for my passion for coaching soccer. Actually, one of the qualities I most admire about Joanne is that she appreciates the velocity at which I approach my interests. I can’t ever remember hearing her say, “Enough about teeth already,” though I couldn’t blame her if she did.
In addition to her patience and graciousness, Jo has a superhuman level of tenderness and empathy. She’s the person who’s always ready to give our patients a warm hug when they show up for an appointment. Her smile lights up a room, and she always knows what to say to lighten the mood.

As empty-nesters, we are enjoying the chance to spend more one-on-one time, including going out to eat as often as we can. Another passion project, one that speaks to Jo’s character, is fostering dogs. Over the years, we’ve fostered over 100 good boys and girls, most of them beagles. While it’s a team effort, Jo is the one who inspired me to get involved with fostering in the first place. I consider myself lucky to work alongside the love of my life, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Some couples may tell you they worry about spending too much time together, but in our case, there’s no such thing.

Why You Should Exercise With Your Significant Other
Couples Who Sweat Together Stay Together
PLAY CATCH! Grab a medicine ball and do some overhead passes, feet-to-feet situp passes, and back-to- back twists with each other. All of these easy at-home workouts help build a solid core. GO FOR A RUN! If the weather is nice, the two of you can lace up and hit the pavement together. You could even make a couples playlist to listen to as you run. If the cold temperatures are preventing you from enjoying the great outdoors, head to the gym and challenge each other on side-by-side treadmills. TRY SOME ROCK CLIMBING! This is a great way to get a good workout while simultaneously building trust with your partner. Most rock-climbing gyms offer classes in belaying, and staff members can give you tips to improve your form. Sign up to work with an instructor and test your personal limits together.
Each Valentine’s Day, people all over the world rush to the store to buy chocolates and all the ingredients necessary to whip up a romantic dinner for two. Unfortunately, these calorie-laden holiday traditions can undermine the fitness resolutions you made just six weeks before. Instead of throwing your goals by the wayside this February, why not make fitness a couples activity? The National Library of Medicine published a study showing that couples who focused on their health together went to the gym more often and reported feeling more connected in their relationship. These findings were corroborated by a study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. Scientists claimed that partners who exercised together reported higher levels of happiness and satisfaction in their relationship. If you and your sweetheart are looking for a romantic way to burn some calories this month, here are some great workout ideas for two.
Meet Dr. Richard Titlebaum Our New Endodontist
At Fabey Dental, we pride ourselves on providing our patients with the highest level of care and the greatest number of treatment options. To achieve this goal, we often enlist the help of specialists with advanced skills to expand the scope of our practice. One such specialist, endodontist Dr. Richard Titlebaum, recently joined our team. We’re honored to welcome Dr. Titlebaum to the practice. With degrees from Haverford College and Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Titlebaum comes to us with the highest possible credentials. He received his certificate of endodontics fromAlbert Einstein Medical Center, where he now serves as the attending endodontic and heads a research team. Dr. Titlebaum was drawn to endodontics when he saw its potential to transform the way patients felt about their smile. “A teacher once told me, ‘Anyone can do a root canal, but not everyone can do it well,’” Dr. Titlebaum recalls. “After hearing that, I became inspired to learn everything I could about
endodontic surgery. Every procedure is different, so the work is constantly challenging.”
In addition to the stimulating, demanding nature of the work, Dr. Titlebaum values the opportunity to create marked changes in the way his patients feel about their teeth. “It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to see patients’ self-confidence improve as a result of a procedure,” he says. “To have the chance to make such an impact on people is not something I take for granted.” Outside of work, Dr. Titlebaum plays squash and ultimate frisbee, hikes, and gardens. He and his wife, Joanne, are avid travelers and have spent extensive time in Central and South America. They also love spending time with their two daughters, Jessica and Sophie, and their son, Max. Dr. Titlebaum will be in our office one day a week. We’re excited to welcome him to the Fabey Dental Team and can’t wait for you to meet him.

Win a Trip to DisneyWorld!
Family Game Night Family game night is a time when a family can forget about all of life’s commitments and bond over a good old-fashioned board game. But the old, tattered Monopoly box or worn-out UNO cards can leave something to be desired, and the classics might be getting a little dull. If you’re tired of playing the same board games over and over, it might be time to start looking for ways to change things up. Here are four tabletop games you might not have heard of that are perfect for spicing up family game night. MYSTERIUM Your family will love delving into this cooperative murder mystery game that is a mixture of Clue and Dixit. You can play as the ghost or as one of the mediums who enters the haunting. The ghost player gives each medium a clue or vision about a potential murderer, and the mediums have to guess which person, room, or weapon was used to murder the ghost player. After each turn, the ghost reveals whether each of the mediums’ guesses are right or not. If all of the mediums succeed in guessing correctly by the seventh in-game hour, they work together to find the true murderer. LASER CHESS A classic game of chess is a great way to spend an evening, and it just got a little more interesting. Laser chess includes all the problem-solving skills a typical chess game offers but with a twist. At the end of each turn, a player fires a small laser beam that bounces off the mirrored chess pieces. If it hits the non-mirrored surface of a piece, that piece is taken by the player. A player wins when the opposing player’s king piece is illuminated. CATAN Welcome to the island of Catan! After a long voyage at sea, the people in your expedition compete against other seafarers in building settlements. Enjoy the 45–90-minute game as you and your family build roads, barter resources, and race for absolute supremacy on Catan. ONE NIGHTWEREWOLF Every night, werewolves prowl around the village, and it’s up to the villagers to find the werewolf once the sun rises — before it’s too late. Each person plays a unique role with different abilities to help find or conceal the werewolf. If the werewolf is caught, the villagers win the game, but if the werewolf manages to escape, the villagers lose. Now you can bring some exciting variety into your family game nights. Don’t miss out on these excellent tabletop games, and most importantly, have fun!

What’s Inside? How I Met Joanne Couples Who Sweat Together Stay Together Spotlight on Dr. Richard Titlebaum Bring Variety to Family Game Night Easton’s Most Famous Son
A Tribute to Larry Holmes The Heavyweight Champ of Easton While boxing is plagued with too many organizations handing out titles, none is as prestigious as the lineal heavyweight championship. Rather than being decided by a governing body, the lineal champion is simply “the man who beat the man.” In the history of boxing, only 38 men have held claim to the title of lineal heavyweight champion. One of them, Larry Holmes, also happens to be one of Easton’s most legendary residents. Known as “The Easton Assassin,” Holmes held the lineal title for nearly five full years. He won it by defeating Muhammad Ali in a fight that signaled the end of Ali’s days among the elite. Holmes, who regarded his adversary as a hero, shed tears after the fight. He went on to defend the title 12 times before eventually losing a decision to Michael Spinks, the first loss of his professional career. At one point, Holmes’ fame was such that The Sunburst Band, a local funk group, had a minor hit with a tribute to the champ, fittingly titled after his iconic nickname. Holmes’ hall-of-fame career took him to the heights of stardom, but he never lost touch with his Easton roots. “I met a lot of people throughout my travels, my fighting. I got to meet people that I thought I would never meet,” he said at a celebration honoring the 40th anniversary of his title win. “But I never get a thrill like I get when I come home.” Throughout his life, he’s been a constant force for good in our community with his Heart of a Legend organization and other charitable and business endeavors. Today, you’ll find a statue of Holmes in Scott Park, right off of Larry Holmes Drive. These tributes testify to his impact on Easton in particular and the Lehigh Valley in general. Though feared for his thunderous power, Holmes is revered just as much for his kindness of heart and the warmth of his gap-toothed smile.
Not many places can say they’re home to a lineal heavyweight champion. We think it’s pretty dang cool to be part of that list.
