HEADTEACHER’S MESSAGE

This week we have been marking Holocaust Memorial Day, learning not just about the Nazi Holocaust but examples of more recent genocides. This year’s theme is ‘For a Better Future’. Our Year 9 students were privileged to be invited to Richmond Synagogue where they learned about the

A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEADTEACHER

holocaust, hearing the personal histories directly from survivors and survivor families. Students took part in workshops reflecting upon how we can all choose to act in ways that reduce hatred and fear in our com- munity. The scale of the atrocities is difficult to understand but when told that if we held a minute of silence for each victim of the holocaust our silence would last 11 years, this hit home as the pupils understood this would have been most of their lives. In assembly Mr Greaves illustrated how such atrocities start by othering and excluding members of our community. I have been so impressed by the thoughtful responses of our students. Please can I remind parents that we encourage students to travel to and from school by public transport. An increasing number of parents are dropping off and collecting students and the increased traffic is making Fifth Cross Road congested and dangerous. Less traffic is not only better for our environment but also makes our roads safer. This week Year 8 has taken their turn at the Bake Off. We had a delicious array of fruity flavours this week and again struggled to choose our winners but I am delighted to announce that first place went to Emilia, Gabby and Hayley in 8FLE with gorgeous green strawberry and matcha cupcakes. 8PIR and 8STR were very tasty our runners up. Well done all!

Next week is Children’s Mental Health Week. This year’s theme is ‘Know yourself, grow yourself’ encouraging children, young people and adults to embrace self-awareness and explore what it means to them. This will help them grow and develop resilience to cope with what life throws at them. Place2B have created a series of resources, using the characters from Disney’s Inside Out 2, including some excellent Tips for families. It’s also a good time to encourage your children to have a look at the on-demand student webinars created by the Anna Freud Centre, on topics including exam stress, anxiety, low mood and staying well online. The full list can be accessed here. Additionally, we’d like to remind you about the upcoming in-person workshop on Exam Stress with the Mental Health Support Team, at 6pm on Thursday 27th February at Waldegrave. You can register your interest here.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 9

Year 9 students have been a wonderful example of our Waldegrave ethos this week by showing great maturi- ty during their trips to Richmond Synagogue. The trips were arranged to learn more about the persecution of Jews by the Nazi regime as well as other genocides in more recent history as they reflected on Holocaust Me- morial Day. We are really proud of them and the teachers involved praised how lovely they were. It was great to hear so many of them talking about how impactful and informative these trips were. This morning we held an assembly with Mr Sharp about Year 9 Options. It was a great opportunity for our students to better understand their choices and how the process works. I hope you will speak to you child(ren) about this ahead of the Options Evening for parents on Tuesday 4 February, 5-6pm (specific communication was sent out about this). Please do try to attend as there will be lots of information to help you support your child/ren with this process. Year 9 also demonstrated their culinary skills in the Bake Off last week. Well done to 9SAN for taking the top spot and to 9SSR in second, closely followed by 9EFR in third. A huge well done! Mrs Ahmed said that these bakes were some of the best in the entire school :) Please also be reminded that students must be bringing in their chromebooks each day fully charged. Year 9s are getting Behaviour Points for not having this equipment and we want to avoid this. Ensure that your child/ ren keep their chromebook safe and charged each night.

We hope you have a lovely weekend.

MRS MORTIMER, HEAD OF YEAR 9

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘The Hunger Games’ by Suzanne Collins

In a dystopian future, the capital holds annual games where one boy and one girl (aged 12-18) from each of the 12 districts is chosen to fight to the death in an arena. The games are televised and shown across the country as a reminder to the labourers in the district that they are powerless against the capital. When Katniss’ sister has her name called during the annual reaping, Katniss volunteers to take her place as a daring act of sacrifice. The contrast between the glamour of the capital and the harsh conditions of the districts is an eye opening com- mentary on the dangers of political corruption and capitalism.

FRIDAY MATHS PUZZLE Our learning focus for tutor time on Fridays this term is mathematics, with the maths department setting some thought provoking brain teasers each week for pupils to grapple with. Maths puzzles can help foster problem-solving skills by challenging children to think creatively about the problem they are facing. This skill cna be transfered to everyday activities, such as decision making and even managing emotions. Please have a go at this week’s problem, talk to your child about how they approached it and what the solutions were. We hope you enjoy these at home as much as the students have enjoyed them with their form!

Y7 Netball Friendly vs RPA

This has been a week of wins for our Basketball Teams. Our Year 7 Basketball team (pictured) are keeping up their winning streak, with a 34-8 victory over Hampton High on Monday evening. The game was played at home and was a really good team performance with everyone trying to play their best. Well done to the whole team and congratulations again to Shaleen C who was voted players’ player of the match. Our Year 8/9 Basketball team have now officially been named as Richmond Borough’s under 15s Basketball champions following the tournament on Wednesday! We also had a friendly netball match last night against Richmond Park Academy, playing away. It was a balanced evening with our A team losing their match and our B team winning.

Well done to all our pupils who took part in sports this week.
