THE CUCKOO CONUNDRUM February 27 The Sanibel-Captiva Audubon Society hosts Biologist Rachel Frieze Mullin. For more than a year, she and her Ecostudies Institute associates have been conducting the first major study of the rare and elusive Mangrove Cuckoo that inhabits Sanibel Island. In “Unlocking the Secrets of the Mangrove Cuckoo,” the biologist shares her findings. The presentation takes place at Sanibel Community House, 7:30PM on February 20 (donations of $5.00 per person are suggested). of Public and International Affairs, Slaughter is an esteemed academic, foreign policy analyst and public commentator who also formerly served as Director of Policy Planning for the U.S. State Department. In 2013, Slaughter was named President of the Washington DC-based New America Foundation, a non-profit, nonpartisan public policy institute and think tank focusing on issues that include national security studies, technology, asset building, health, energy, education, and the economy. Lecture begins at 7:30PM on March 2 at Big Arts Schein Performance Hall. Tickets are $35, however series is sold out. In some cases, tickets can be purchased on night of lecture. Those so interested are encouraged to arrive early in the event of possible opening. Mar 2 WILL SURELY SLAUGHTER HER SPEECH March 2 The Forum BIG Arts Distinguished Scholars Lecture Series presents Slaughter. The former Dean of Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School Ann-Marie LEADING LADY IN HISTORICAL FICTION March 11 In conjunction with their annual Author Lecture Series, the Jennifer Chiaverini, the New York Times bestselling writer most known for her Elm Creek Quilt books. Chiaverini recently released The Spymistress , a Civil War-era tale based on true events involving a woman who cared for Union prisoners of war while stealing Confederate secrets. Chiaver- ini has garnered acclaim as a masterful storyteller in the genre of historical fiction. Chiaverini’s lecture begins at 7PM, March 11, at the Sanibel Public Library. WRITERS SPRING FORWARD March 13 The Sanibel-Captiva Island Writers will perform selections from their prose and poetic works during the Writers Spring Read, an island tradition since 1987. Selections have been carefully chosen for quality and conduciveness for listeners. Program takes place in the BIG Arts Phillips Gallery at 7:30PM on March 13.
