You’ll need someone to explain to you how to get there, after which you’ll never again need to search for the ide- al excursion spot in Belgrade. If you thought Košutnjak park was named after the hinds [košuta] that lived in its forests, you’d be right. This area of dense forests was a royal hunting ground that was closed to the pub- lic until 1903, when Košutnjak was opened up for citizens to enjoy. It has since been among the most be- loved daytrip destinations for Bel- graders, who enjoy walking its nu- merous trails through forests filled with both deciduous and evergreen trees. And that’s always romantic! ADA CIGANLIJA Evening walks in this part of the city are always very romantic, regardless of the time of year. Dur- ing the summer months, the lakeside cafés place deckchairs on the peb- ble beach, so you can sit and watch the moonlight reflecting off the wa- ter as you share beautiful moments of intimacy with your loved one. However, it’s almost as romantic in February, while you snuggle up and enjoy the same scene through the windows of warm cafés. Thanks to its thick woods, mostly comprising oaks, elms and poplars, it is dubbed a green oasis, while the lake has led to it being nicknamed the Sea of Bel- grade. However, this unique “sea” al- so has its own geyser, a park of stone sculptures, numerous cafés and res- taurants, raft venues docked on the Sava side, the natural Ada Safari is- land lake and countless other con- tents that will enable you to create unforgettable memories with your loved one. GARDOŠ Romantics often opt for this recognisable symbol of Zemun. The beautiful observation point and mys- tical Gardoš tower, with its universal- ly attractive architecture, represent the ideal spot to watch the sunset with a loved one. This hill is the fo- cal point of Zemun, and its Millen- nium Tower serves as an impressive backdrop to one of the best views in the city. The red roofs of Zemun pro-
vide an attractive contrast against the concrete blocks of New Belgrade, and the romantic mood can continue at one of the city’s superb fish restau- rants nearby. AVALA Avala Tower is a symbol of Bel- grade that offers views that seem to extend to the four corners of the world. You won’t be able to en- joy those beautiful views if you visit early in the morning, because you’ll literally be in the clouds that have yet to descend over the city. This moun-
tain is known around the world for the unique blue-green mineral called Aval- ite, samples of which are preserved in the Natural History Museum’s col- lection of rare minerals. It is known among nature lovers for its 600 plant species, which includes some that are very rare and some that are highly me- dicinal, but also for its high forests and eight mountain springs provid- ing clean water. Nevertheless, Ava- la remains best known here in Ser- bia for its tower. At a height of 202.8 metres, it has served to inform gen- erations of Belgraders that they’ve arrived home since 1965, when it be- came operational. The whole experi- ence is worth the effort, so be sure to reserve a day for Avala.
