Smatra se da su prve mimoze stigle u Francusku u 18. veku i da su se prvo sadile oko vila bogatih ljudi koji su zimu provodili na Francuskoj rivijeri

The first mimosas are believed to have arrived in France in the 18 th century, where they were initially planted around the villas of wealthy folk who spent their winters on the Côte d’Azur

There are few places in the world that have entire festivals dedicated to the majestic mimosa, which is the case in Herceg Novi, where for the past 56 years this event has been celebrating life, joy, the goodness of people and the world, love and friendship – precisely the qualities symbolised by this flower. During the period of the festival, the entire city seems to breathe in that same rhythm of carnivals, masked balls and folk festivities, like the fetes of mimosa, fish and wine that are held along the coast and bring to- gether tens of thousands of visi- tors each year. Herceg Novi will open its doors for the 56 th edition of this festival as early as 14 th February, with ma- jorettes, City music, trombonists, a masked parade and performances by Ana Bekuta, Hanka Paldum, Indira Levak formerly of the group Colo- nia, Garavi Sokak and Goca Tržan, Marko Louis, rock band Crvena Jabuka, Hari Mata Hari and Gib- onni. As is the case each year, and this year until 2 nd March, the pro- gramme will be complemented with more than 50 entertaining, chil- dren’s, gastronomic and sporting events, but also some activities that are specific to the coastal region – there will be games of picigin, brisco- la and tressette, while horsedrawn carriages will also be ridden. You might have a desire to brief- ly capture the scent of summer and the sea, and to bring joy, vigour and perseverance into your life. That’s because, as Victor Hugo suggested, if you are a flower – be a mimosa, but if you like a fiesta, come to Her- ceg Novi for this festival!

Spring has arrived on the Montenegrin coast If you are a flower – be a mimosa! In Herceg Novi each February, this beautiful flower with an intoxicating fragrance represents a symbol of the most joyful seaside story, woven from song, wine, sun and sea

While the continent is still experiencing its winter slumber and the first snowdrops are just preparing to shyly raise their white heads, far from view, life on the coast is al- ready starting to flourish, and is do- ing so in yellow! Gentle and fluffy, and yet strong and defiant, mimo- sas present their sunny, fragrant, fluffy balls that serve to announce the arrival of spring. Symbolising freedom, femininity, sensitivity and faithful love, the mimosa is the sub- ject of legends and is sung about and celebrated, while all those who’ve strolled the streets of Montenegro’s sunniest city in February have re- mained mesmerised by its beauty. There are known to be around 800 varieties of this yellow flow- er, which is native to India, Africa, America, Australia and other arid, subtropical and tropical regions. It

was brought to Europe by shrewd sailors, who thought of their home- land while exploring distant lands and wanted to offer it something new. This plant that’s sunny and gentle, yet defiant, was transport- ed by sailors with love more than a century ago and arrived in Her- ceg Novi, where around 20 varie- ties are today cultivated. It has made itself at home here and apparent- ly felt such love that it seemingly blooms more beautifully in the Bay of Kotor than it does anywhere else.
