Thanksgiving is a holiday I never miss. No matter where I am or how far I have to travel, I am always with my family on Thanksgiving. It’s my favorite holiday for so many reasons. When I was growing up, my mom would wake up early to say a prayer over the turkey. Then she got the family up so we could go to Mass and get the wine and bread blessed. After we returned home, everyone in the family helped make the feast. While my mom worked on the turkey, the rest of us were responsible for making the sides. Every year, my brother made mashed potatoes, my sister made broccoli casserole, and I made my favorite

I love Thanksgiving because it really is a time for family. It’s a nice long weekend to spend with the people you love, eating great food and watching hours of “The Twilight Zone” — or is that last one just my family? In addition to binge-watching old-school science fiction, I also appreciate the time we have to reflect on all our blessings. This past year has brought a lot of change into my life, and I have so much to be thankful for. I am thankful I met Dr. Drake and made the move to Harlingen. This community has been so welcoming and wonderful, and all the people at Sabal Dentistry — the team and the patients alike — are awesome. I am also thankful that, even after the move, I am still able to visit my family often, and they’re all healthy and happy. This has been a truly great year, and I am excited to go into the holiday season with all of you. I want to wish a big thank-you to everyone at the office and in the community who has helped make this year so good. May you enjoy a wonderful holiday with your loved ones, eating great food in the fifth dimension. Dr. Diana Cabrera Happy Thanksgiving! –

side: candied yams. It took a little while to make everything because the turkey was big, and only one side could fit in the oven at a time while it was roasting. We didn’t mind the wait, though, because one of the television stations aired an all-day marathon of “The Twilight Zone,” and we would watch that between all the cooking and eating. Many of these traditions continue to this day. I still make candied yams, and we still spend all day watching “The Twilight Zone,” but there are a lot of new traditions we enjoy now, too. I try to get a head start on my holiday shopping, though I usually take advantage of Cyber Monday more than Black Friday. That said, I do end up at the mall the weekend after Thanksgiving so my daughter can take pictures with Santa. I do this early so I can mail Christmas cards to all our family who live out of town. My daughter is only 3, and so far, she’s cried every year when they put her in Santa’s lap. I always hope the pictures will turn out better, so fingers crossed that this will be our year!
