touch with them. I stayed by Sue’s bedside all night. About two in the morning she began to give signs of life. I breathed a prayer, asking God to allow me one more opportunity to talk to her. Slowly she opened her eyes and for a moment looked blankly around, trying to figure things out. She didn’t seem to notice me. Her eyes closed and her mouth opened as she started to say some thing, “Hospital — Black Dynamite —” was all I could make out. “Sue,” I called softly. “Sue, do you hear me?” Again she opened her eyes slowly, and looked at me. I could tell she recognized me. “Leonard,” she said in a voice that was little more than a whisper. A faint smile came over her face as she kept looking at me. “I’m so glad you are here.” She reached over and squeezed my hand. “Sue — I’m real sorry,” the words came hard. “Oh — Please don’t leave me, Leonard. I’m afraid I’m going to die. . . . And, Leonard, I’m . . . I’m not ready. Do you think you can help me?” She finished all out of breath, but before I had a chance to say anything she continued, as tears filled her eyes, “What will God do to me?” “Sue, He’ll forgive you if you tell Him how sorry you are and if you’ll ask Him to. Not only will He forgive you but He’ll save you,” I told her. She looked at me rather puzzled, and said, “But I don’t understand.” I put my hand on her forehead, then I brushed back her hair easy like, and for a moment looked at her, tears filling my eyes inspite of my effort to keep them back. I re membered how once her eyes sparkled with life — how once her cheeks were full and pink. As I took all this in at a glance, through my mind flashed the words from the Bible, “He that soweth to the flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption.” “Sue,” I said, “once, long ago, I talked to you and you said you didn’t understand. I asked you to just take my word, but you didn’t. Now, once again I’m talking to you, and once again you say you don’t understand. But Sue, please listen to me. You don’t need to understand, just take me at my word. Actually you need to take
