Broadening Horizons in the Chemical Sciences

Dr Alan Stephen Catalyst Scientist

Alan Stephen is a Catalyst Scientist working on Hydrogen technologies at Johnson Matthey. After completing his Biochemistry degree at the University of Oxford, he moved to the University of Birmingham to do a PhD. Here, he worked on synthesising nanoparticles from bacteria for use as catalysts in fuel cells. He then moved to Johnson Matthey as a catalyst scientist for both fuel cells and electrolysers. He manages the transfer of promising research catalysts for use in commercial products. With this role, he works with multiple functions including research, commercial, operations and others. Alongside his day job, he is also part of Pride in JM, an LGBT+ specific employee resource group that promotes LGBT+ inclusivity across the business.
