Dr Joanna Jasiewicz Royal Society of Chemistry

Dr Joanna Jasiewicz leads the Race and Ethnicity Unit at the Royal Society of Chemistry, building strong relationships across the sectors to design and implement initiatives to collectively address systemic racism. Joanna is a social scientist by background, having completed her PhD at the University of Barcelona. Before joining the RSC in 2022, she has led the work on racism and race at the University of Cambridge, driving the University’s successful submission for the Advance HE’s Race Equality Charter Bronze Award, and leading on the design and implementation of the institutional anti-racism action plan. Prior to that, Joanna has worked at the Centre for Global Equality (Cambridge), European Centre for Minority Issues (Germany) and at multiple Higher Education institutions in Europe. Joanna is an expert facilitator and trainer, supporting organisations with compassion and empathy to increase race fluency, understanding of inequalities, and capacities to change mindsets and behaviours.

Dr Laura Reyes MRSC Royal Society of Chemistry

Laura Reyes is Programme Manager, Race and Ethnicity Unit, which is part of the Global Inclusion team at the Royal Society of Chemistry, where she strives to make the chemical sciences community more inclusive for everyone. Through this role, she has played a key role in various activities and programmes, most recently in the development of the 2022 report Missing Elements: Racial and ethnic inequalities in the chemical sciences, and delivery of the Broadening Horizons in the Chemical Sciences pilot programme. Originally from Colombia and having moved as a child to Toronto, Canada, Laura has now relocated to the UK in late 2019. Trained as a chemist, Laura received her BSc in chemistry at York University (Canada), followed by completing her PhD at the University of Toronto where she researched the surface chemistry of heterogenous catalysts for CO2 utilisation. After her PhD, she worked at GreenCentre Canada and the Chemical Institute of Canada, before relocating to the UK and joining the RSC in 2020.
