Humanities From Cantors to Bel Canto: Jewish Representations in Opera Fee: $78 Opera stars of Jewish heritage including Beverly Sills, Robert Merrill, and Natalie Dessay have excited and enriched world culture. Although problematic representations of Jewish stereotypes have permeated opera, culturally authentic Jewish opera has also been created and performed. We will dive into all of this, looking at the image of the Jew in opera, operas written by Jews, and operas authentic to Jewish culture. Examples to be included are Strauss’ “Salome,” “Enemies, A Love Story,” the new Afro-Cuban-Klezmer Yiddish Opera “Hatuey,” and “State of the Jews” about the founder of modern Zionism, Theodore Herzl. The scope of these stories is wide. They depict the lost world of the vibrant Jewish Yiddish-speaking community of Poland before the Holocaust, as well as the trials and tribulations of the survivors who are thrust into their new lives in the United States.
