of the g reat m ajority will grow cold” (Matt. 24:12—-W eymouth). The war has increased lawlessness manifold in Australia, New Zèaland, India and Palestine, as well as in the United States and Canada. There is no deep, pungent conviction for sin today. Why not? Because th e people are ignorant of the Divine Standard of righteousness. Men today are making the commandments of God of none effect by th eir own traditions, and the traditions of ' th e ir fathers. Christians are stultifying th e ir con science,, grieving the Holy Spirit, and “walking in ways th a t are not good, afte r THEIR OWN thoughts.” They do not believe in the exceeding sinfulness of sin; th a t th ere is a judgm ent com ing; th a t all the misery in the world today is the effect of sin, and th a t the lawless will be condemned and punish ed. Who is at. fault? The shepherds of Israel. They are teaching “Visions of th eir own h ea rts,” and not out of the mouth of th e Unchanging One; and the

people love to have it so. Nine hundred thirty-five crimes were reported in Montreal in 21 days, and 95 per cent of the crim inals escaped punishment. Who will dare stand in this hour, in the breach, and maintain the faith once delivered to the saints? 126 Garnet Street, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. BELIEVER’S BADGE The badge of a Christian is not one that the world can see. One has .for his badge a crosier, another has a crucifix, another has a tonsure, another has a robe of some color or shape; but a Christian’s badge is not a tonsure, nor a crucifix, nor a crosier, nor a shibboleth, nor a robe, nor a phy lactery; but it is, “ By this shall all men know th at ye are my disciples, if ye love one another.” This is the badge of the Christian; and in proportion as it shows itself, the evidence of our true brother hood comes out.—Dr. Cumming.

SCHOLARSHIP IS AGREED” (?)

READ THIS: Prof. Bowne, theologian, said: “The church has need of a body of scholarly investigators to do its intellectual work. They will have the function of formulating the spiritual life so as best to ex press it. They will have to ad ju st religious though t to th e ever-ad vancing though t of cultivated in telligence.”

THEN THIS: Dr. John Thomas of England said: “ One of the g reatest perils of the p resen t age is its intellec tu al arrogance. The demand is being made everywhere th a t ev erything shall be subordinated to intellectual processes and results. The scholar and th ink er arrogates to himself all power on earth , not in heaven.”

THEN FINALLY READ THIS: Dr. Orr, th e Scotch theologian, said: “The present age has abound ing faith in scholarship. When a scholar speaks about the Bible, let no man peep or m utter. I should assuredly be the last to seem to throw any slight on sound and accurate scholarship. But it is verv much to th e point to observe th a t it has never been by learning bv philosophy, by science th a t th e church has been revived and saved in eras of g reat religious laxity and abounding infidelitv. When Jesus introduced His religion into the world, He did not choose scholars but humble, simple-minded men attached to Himsdlf by a living faith and endowed w ith power from on high.”
