Hupeh, in which province. Hankow is located, is a t war w ith Hu n an Province. Even European vessels have been fired upon by Hunanese troops, and go to Hunan under naval escort; b u t they go, and th ere isn ’t much danger. “Chester Rutledge and W alter Steven are expected at Shanghai next Monday. Will try to go through to Nan Yoh, bui w ithout th eir wives. ; “ Reuben had to leave me to go to his wife, who weighs below ninety-six pounds, and has no appetite, largely the resu lt of fearing th a t Reuben was not being properly looked afte r in his F a mine Relief work, and packing up and tak ing th e two children rig h t out into th e fam ine district to look after him. He rath e r th ink s th is saved his health if not his life, bu t it was hard on her. We do not th ink her condition is seri ous, b u t her physician w rote th a t she needed him. P ro tected Amid Dangers “The typhoon of August 14 disar ranged railro ad s and mails all over this p art of China. To cap th e climax, th ere was ano ther typhoon August 21. The railroad to Tsinan was almost ready for operation again, bu t th is typhoon and th e accompanying rain swept away four teen miles of track, and th ere is a lake sixteen miles wide where the railroad formerly was. In one place south of Shanghai five hundred houses were swept away by a tid al wave. “ I have been wonderfully protected and my jourpeys expedited. I cannot go in to details, bu t God does answer prayer. I have had a strenuous tim e on train s and steam ers and a t conferences every day since I landed in Yokohama
Ju ly 14, travelling by native boats, chairs and any old sort of way, bu t per* fectly well and not tired. God is good.’’ Steven-Rutledge P arty Mr. and Mrs. Steven and Mr. and Mrs. Rutledge (referred to in Dr. Torrey’s le tte r) have been sent to give Dr. Keller much needed assistance in his work,, spending the first year in the language school a t Nanking. The Autumn Bible School held every year a t Nan Yoh (one of th e sacred moun tains of China), affords an opportunity for delegates from th e various missions, together w ith students from the Chang sha Bible In stitu te, to meet together for a month of Bible study, conference and speeial work among the pilgrims to the famous shrines. Nanyoh Work Dr. Keller, in w riting regarding the Nanyoh work,.last year, said: “Every Sunday evening a t Nanyoh we have a testimony meeting. I have been in many such meetings in the homeland, b u t never have I heard b e t te r testimonies th a n those we listen to here. Even w ith a th ree m inute lim it, th ere is not opportunity for all who de sire to speak to do so. “Every Wednesday evening two of the band leaders each tak e an all too brief half hour to tell something of th e work of th e past year. L et me give you one of these stories in a still more con densed fo rm ; “At one of th e centers round which th e band worked a shopkeeper parried the statem en t th a t ‘Jesus was m ighty to save’ w ith the unusual argum ent: ‘Oh, is He? Then let Him save my sou Jim .’ (Jim is not the real name, which, of course, was Chinese.) “This son, it tu rned out, was a regu lar scamp. The chief difference between him and th e prodigal son of th e fif teen th of Luke was th a t Jim stayed at home while wasting his fath e r’s sub stance in riotous living. “ Jim heard w hat his fath e r had said and th ereafter gave the members of the band as wide a berth as possible. He ‘was never a t home unless he was in bed, .^—•which was often un til midday as the afterm ath of a night spent in gambling,
