As I have traveled the world over the last 38 years, I’ve learned a lot about people and what they want from life. Since our mission is to enhance lives by helping people reach their goals, I have asked thousands of people from as many as 20 different countries what their goals are and how we can help them reach them. And I’ve learned it doesn’t matter what country, what nationality, what religion, or what political persuasion they are, the answer is always pretty much the same. People simply want to have a great life. So…since everyone’s goal is to have to a great life, you could very accurately say our mission is to help people have a great life! And it’s also evident that everyone sees the definition of a great life pretty much the same. With the help of these thousands of people, I made a list. The list is pretty short. First on the list is good health. (It’s hard to imagine a great life without good health.) Next is great relationships—to be loved by someone and to love them back

That’s the list. That’s what people throughout the universe feel they need to have a great life. So here’s my conclusion… We’ve got what they want!

I’ve always loved the promise of a new year and the chance we have to hit the reset button on any area of life. A new year gives us full permission to take an inventory of our lives and identify areas that we want to improve. By now, you’ve probably already set new goals to improve throughout 2024. I hope your goals propel you forward and help you change your life this year. As you’ve become part of the Melaleuca community, you’ve likely noticed how goal setting is part of our DNA. After all, Melaleuca’s mission is “To enhance the lives of those we touch by helping people reach their goals. SM ” I’m proud to say our mission is as meaningful and vibrant today as it was 38 years ago thanks, in large part, to Members like you.

This month at Launch, we invited thousands of attendees to write down a new goal for 2024 and share it with others. We write down and share goals at many Melaleuca events because we know how critical goals are in setting ourselves up for success. Have you noticed that sometimes reaching goals doesn’t require massive changes? In fact, it’s often the minimal changes that have the most significant impact on your life and the lives of others. What small changes are you making during this new year? For me, a small change I’m making this year is to connect more with the people around me. Why? I’m convinced that becoming great at connecting with others will help me feel more fulfilled and reach my goals faster. Whatever your goals for 2024 are, consider adding this small change to the list to help you reach your goals and have more fun doing it: become great at connecting with others.

We’re more wired, yet more lonely.

We are alive during a fantastic time. It’s easier than ever to stay connected with hundreds or even thousands of people— something previous generations simply couldn’t do. At a glance, we know everything that’s happening with our family and friends in real time—yet nearly half of all Americans today say they are lonely. 1 We are driven by likes and follows. Our inherent tendency to compare ourselves to others can lead us to think that others have the perfect life in every way. More and more research is clearly showing a negative relationship between social media usage and overall wellness and happiness. In one study of

Make eye contact.

During your next few conversations with others, do a self-assessment on how often you make

eye contact. If you’re like most people, you’ll discover your eyes—and your attention—are

focused on something else. You might be looking at your email or text messages. You might be distracted by the activity going on around you. You might even be uncomfortable looking into someone’s eyes because it can be an intimate experience. However, as you practice making eye contact, you will begin to find it a natural, refreshing experience. Anne Sexton wrote, “I like you; your eyes are full of language.” Many of us confuse being in proximity with being present. Use eye contact as a way to stay mentally engaged with the person ”

Here’s what I believe. As humans, we are hardwired to connect with others and to form a community. We are hungry for authentic relationships, being known and understood, and the feeling of being part of something

bigger. However, many of us have allowed technology to replace the joy of connecting with others in personal and profound ways. I’m afraid we’re losing the art of human connection. How

can we reverse the trend? By renewing our focus on establishing connections outside what we find on our phones and computers.

The next time you’re at an event, function, or even the gym, do everything you can to remember the names of the individuals you meet. Bring a small notepad and write down their names. Memorize their names. And then call them by their name the next time you meet them. While it’s not easy to do, you’ll find it’s worth the effort as you become more connected with others. Be curious. During your conversations, make a goal to understand as much as you can about the topic being discussed. Train your brain to be curious about what’s being said and why it’s being said. Doing so will prevent your mind from becoming distracted and help you become an active listener. Here are just a few questions you can ask to keep yourself 100% focused on the individual. Discover: “You said X. Tell me more about that.” Clarify: “I’m not sure I caught your last point. Can you go over that again?” Understand: “Tell me, when you said X, why did you say it like that?”

There once was a time when the rotary dial, landline phone was viewed as disruptive technology. Today there are so many methods you can use to approach others and schedule an appointment to share the Melaleuca Overview. For some approaches, you’ll call on the phone. For others, you’ll text or message first and then call. What’s most important is you’re connecting with the person and scheduling the appointment to share the Overview. How you make your approach might change depending on the situation.

Overdependence on technology as you try to enroll new Members or develop personal leadership will most likely lead to disappointing results. You may find that what was once a vibrant, human experience can quickly lose its “soul” and become merely a transactional experience. Leaders who use technology to complement the Seven Critical Business-Building Activities are ahead of the game. One of my daughters lives in Portland, Oregon. In her search for a church, she found Rose Church in southeast Portland. Here’s what Rose Church does so well. They use Instagram and Facebook to establish the initial connection with its members and to form small online groups. From there, they use a live, human connection to deepen the relationship. Social media and technology allow us to set up in-person interactions that can then create meaningful relationships with others. You can do the same with your Melaleuca business. While our Seven Critical Business-Building Activities remain the best way to build a Melaleuca business, technology means that how we do them might change. Here are a couple examples of changes that have already happened at Melaleuca.

When I got home, I called up Kristian and said, ‘Show me what to do!’ And I’ve been running ever since.” “Running” is putting it mildly. In addition to his Melaleuca business, Nate still works full time, has three teenagers, and helps manage his family’s six-acre homestead, complete with a one-acre garden and chickens, and soon they'll add bees. When asked how he balances it all, he just laughs. “It takes a lot of juggling and a lot of scheduling,” he explains. “It’s like I share with my team: do everything with specific intent. You must block out 10–12 hours every week for your business. It doesn’t have to be all at once, but you have to consistent. You have to make it a priority.” One of Nate’s biggest priorities is the community he is building. “It’s a family,” he explains. “We are there for each other. We believe in accountability, lifting each other up, and we strive for excellence.” Seeing his community learn and grow is one of Nate’s biggest motivations. “Being able to see the impact and changes in these families’ lives is really powerful,” Nate says. “It’s such a blessing to see them grow in their confidence and leadership. I love to see them pay off their debts and pay their mortgages. That’s what matters: lives changing. What we have with Melaleuca is pretty amazing—it is our mission, our duty to share it.”

After enrolling with Melaleuca, Nate and his family grew to love Melaleuca's products, but Nate didn’t give much attention to building his Melaleuca business until his enroller, National Director 9 Kristian Hoenicke, “tricked” him into building it. “Due to the pandemic, a trip to Fiji for our twentieth wedding anniversary got cancelled in October 2020,” Nate explains. “In early 2021, I was connecting with Kristian, and he asked me if I would be open to earning a free trip to Tulum. I told him, ‘Are you serious?’ He asked me if I thought I could refer 20 friends to Melaleuca. It would take some effort, but with my work ethic, he said it was doable. I believed him, and once I committed to that, he put me on a Fast Track team, and we ended up earning our first incentive trip to Tulum.” It was on that trip that Nate decided he needed to get serious about his Melaleuca business. “Amy and I had an absolute blast together on that trip,” Nate recalls. “While watching the sun rise over the ocean on our last day, my wife made a comment to me that I will never forget. She said, ‘You know, in the 16 years you worked hard for your job, they’ve never let me come on a trip with you.’ That hit me hard. And the more I thought about that,

A Wonderful Change Cecilia Lopez and William Coreas Garcia found Melaleuca at a time of serious financial need. Because of their experience with several multilevel marketing companies, they had lost a large amount of money and friends. Three years

A word of advice: while you’re focused on enrolling new Melaleuca Members to earn the Critical Activity Bonus month after month, remember not to neglect a new business builder’s training. “If you enroll someone who wants to refer customers, make sure there’s a lot of hand-holding in the beginning,” Katie says. “Provide tools such as verbiage and relatable responses they might encounter as they start to share Melaleuca themselves. I often have new team members send me a screenshot of the conversation they’re having with a potential customer so that we can work through what to say together.” Katie encourages new builders to make a list of three or four names to start. Together, they discuss an approach tailored to each individual. “While earning the Critical Activity Bonus is great, remember why we’re here: to help others reach their goals,” she says. “Be intentional about helping people have those initial successes, and they will become more confident in their business-building practices until they are rock-solid team members within your organization.” Ultimately, enrolling a minimum of four shoppers a month keeps your business on track to grow at a consistent rate. “Yes, the CAB is a great way to be consistent in your action steps,” Katie says, “but I also think it’s a reminder to ask yourself, ‘Hey, I have earned this bonus and it’s awesome, but who can I help earn it next? Who is the next Director I want to attract?’ If we aren’t enrolling customers regularly, we aren’t getting to the other people we can help.”

“My family counts on this achievement,” she says.

Katie has big goals—she wants to continue being able to afford her daughter’s private school and pay off her mortgage in the next few years. She uses her CAB to make additional payments on the principle of her loan. “Building this business is not easy, but if you’re willing to help families enhance their lives by having those hard conversations, then in my experience the enrollments happen,” she explains. “Focus on helping four families a month.” One of Katie’s favorite things about the Critical Activity Bonus is that it acts as a measure of accountability for business builders at every level. “No one can rest on their laurels here at Melaleuca,” she says. “It’s also important to set an example for new team members. If I am asking someone to enroll four new Members a month, then I’m shooting for that goal as well. I don’t always make it, but having the Critical Activity Bonus is such a great way for all of us to develop healthy habits and continue progressing.”

“When Chuck passed away, I was really struggling,” Trixie says. “Thankfully, a friend of mine, Mary Hartman, who is a life coach, invited me to her home in Florida for a weeklong retreat to help me work through the grief.” Trixie and a few of her close friends attended this retreat. They thoroughly enjoyed Mary’s coaching sessions. But they were in for a surprise! After one of the sessions wrapped up, Mary’s husband, Jeff, walked into the room. “You girls need to take a break,” he said. “I’m going to take you out and teach you pickleball.” “I thought, ‘What?’” Trixie laughs. “It sounded like the dumbest sport ever. But I love racquetball. So once I got a pickleball paddle in my hand and walked out onto the court, I knew I was in trouble.” Sure enough, by the time Trixie boarded her plane back to Texas, she had a newfound passion—pickleball—as well as new business partners in the Hartmans, who she helped enroll with Melaleuca and begin building their business. Back home, Trixie dove into the sport. Playing pickleball proved to be great therapy, keeping her sharp and active and allowing her to meet many new friends. “For a long time, I just enjoyed playing,” she says. “But I eventually began to teach others how to play. That’s just my nature! My son, Cody, who is a children’s pastor in Minnesota, told me one day, ‘Mom, I know you pretty well. You’re teaching all of these people to play pickleball. I’ll bet you’re sharing your faith with them and sharing Melaleuca while you’re teaching them to play. You’ve started a ministry!’ “Well, that’s exactly what I did,” Trixie laughs. “I called it Praise & Pickle! It didn’t take long for Cody to start his own Praise & Pickle ministry up in Minnesota as well.” In January 2022, while she was visiting her kids in Florida, she went to play pickleball—

and the sport worked another miracle. “I met Charlie Mangold on the court,” Trixie says. “Pickleball did it again. It brought the most amazing man in the world into my life!” Trixie and Charlie married in August 2022. They now run the Cape Coral Praise & Pickle group where together they teach the sport, culture, and etiquette of the game. And they compete at a high level themselves. In fact, they won a gold medal at the recent Senior Olympics in Indiana— and Charlie also won gold in his three individual categories! Trixie estimates that she has helped more than 700 of her friends, family, and acquaintances enroll with Melaleuca over her decades as a Marketing Executive. At times, she has wondered where the next names on her contact list would come from. Pickleball solved that problem. “My passion for the sport has given me a new community full of individuals who want more health and wellness in their lives,” she says. “In talking with them, I can see a great need for our Melaleuca products. As I’ve shared those products, many of my pickleball friends have naturally become loyal Melaleuca customers.
