Block Printing on Textiles M uch the same process is used as when printing on paper; however, it is well to block out you r design on fabric w ith a pencil first. This will help you to know just where each print w ill fall on the material. If it matters whether your block prints right side up, label the top of your block on the back b y dab bing a touch of poster paint on it. When your print begins to look fuzzy or clogged up, wipe the block clean with turpentine and a rag and begin again. Spread a pad of newspapers on the floor and place your cloth on it. Carefully lay the inked block on the spot pencilled out fo r it and step on top of it. Use little jumping steps and be careful not to move the block or the cloth. The idea is to apply pressure evenly to the whole block. Cal-Ink takes two or three days to dry, so if you are working on pieces that have to be hung out of the way, have your drying place prepared before you begin to print on these pieces. Inner Tube Block Prints For children inner tube block printing is superior to linoleum be cause scissors do the job o f the sharp linoleum gouges. And inner tube blocks print in the same m an ner as linoleum. Materials Inner tubing; blocks o f wood or cardboard about 3” x 5” ; all-pur pose cement or W illhold glue; scis sors; printing inks fo r paper or cloth (oil-based inks wh ich are not indelible can be u sed ); con struction paper; designs; palette; brayer. Directions Fold, a paper and with the scis sors cu t a bisymetrical design, such as a simple heart. T race around the design on the inner tube scrap and cu t -the design out with the scissors. G lue to pre-cut piece of wood or cardboard. Ink block and design the same w ay as you do with the printing of l i n o l e u m . (See above.) Print you r block. The rub ber holds the ink well and requires very little pressure, so that a child can do the process himself with a little guidance.

Spiritual Application The craftsman does not create a design for an end in itself. He cre ates it to be used — with a specific project in mind. In like manner God created us for a purpose; He created us to be used. For what pur pose? “ . . . every one that is called by m y name: for I have created him for m y glory, I have formed him ; yea, I have made him” (Isa. 43 : 7 ) . W e are His workmanship, created for His glory. Be sure the camper understands the parallel between his carved de sign and this spiritual truth. Dis cuss with him the matter of God’s will for his life, and how he can be used at this point in his life to God’s glory. Below is a list of suggested projects wh ich w ill challenge his service for Christ. Endeavor to en list him, but allow him a freedom o f choice to make his own plans. Suggested Projects Greeting cards to be sent to ab sentee or ill members of the Sunday school class or church group; mono grams or letterheads for Sunday school c l a s s s t a t i o n e r y ; hand- blocked wrapping paper to use for gifts for the missionary box or the needy families sponsored b y the group; bookplates as gifts for the pastor on his birthday, anniversary, etc., or for books in the church library (such identification will stimulate interest in the library and w ill also keep the books in church ownership much longer) ; posters which can be displayed around the community a d v e r t i s i n g special church events; invitations to par ties, special events such as church plays, revival meetings and special days of prayer. Party favors; valentines; book jackets; gifts for ill members who need e n c o u r a g e m e n t , such as luncheon cloth sets with napkins, tea towels or a favorite book with a hand-blocked book cover; tea towels fo r the church kitchen; new cur tains or drapes for the classroom, department, dining room, library or pastor’s study; Christmas cards. When such projects are under taken, start on a small scale with the motto, “ Each One Teach One.” The skill which a few campers learned on the mountain top will spread throughout the church — and w ill bless the multitudes! END.
