Introduction to Luke The Author —Without question the author of both the gospel which bears his name and the book of Acts was Luke, the beloved physician (Col. 4:- 14; Luke 1:1-4 with Acts 1:1, 2). Luke accompanied Paul on some of his missionary travels (Acts 16:10, note the “ we” ); he was with Paul in Rome during the latter’s first impris onment there (Col. 4:14; Philem. 24), and also was with the apostle during his second imprisonment (2 Tim. 4:11). The Occasion —Luke writes his gos pel to a special friend with a view to giving him an accurate and chrono logical view of the life and ministry of Christ (1:1-4); but certainly this gospel is designed for a wider group than Theophilus alone. Many -Bible students feel that Luke writes with the entire Gentile world in view. The Purpose —To bring assurance to Theophilus concerning the facts of the gospel (1:4), and assuredly to all who read the narrative. God wants every believer to be a man of convic tion. The Plan —Each of the writers of the Bible follows a certain plan in the development of his work. It is Luke’s purpose to emphasize, in chronologi cal order, the ministry of the Lord Jesus as the representative Man—the “ Son of Man” in His work of redemp tion.
