Kemēcemenaw: Menominee Food Sovereignty

CULTURAL CONSIDERATIONS

This chapter provides background and guidance on cultural mores to keep in mind when working with Tribal communities. This is not an exhaustive list but does provide a foundation for understanding and engaging.

Traditional Stories and Teachings

Storytelling and local teachings are a method for passing along information and awakening Indigenous knowledge. Also, non-native facilitators/educators should be aware that these stories and teachings are not for them to pass on or share. These should be perpetuated by the Tribe and its members. As a planner for Indigenous food sovereignty programming, you may have specific teaching objectives planned. Allow for adaptability in planning as storytelling and local teachings are offered by participants. Show respect for what is being shared and give stories and local teachings all the time that is needed for the teachings and the dialogue that will follow.

How can you connect storytelling and traditional teachings back to your program/workshop agenda?

Are there local partners you can co-facilitate with to help guide discussions?

What are ways you can share appreciation for knowledge that is being shared by participants?
