Kemēcemenaw: Menominee Food Sovereignty

The Native Nutrition Conference is held annually in Minnesota and is funded by a Seeds of Native Health campaign set up by the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community in collaboration with the University of Minnesota Healthy Foods Healthy Lives Institute. This was one of the first national nutrition conferences that partners from the Menominee community attended. This served as a great opportunity to connect with other Indigenous communities that are also doing work with food sovereignty and health and wellness. We learned about new projects that we can integrate into local community foods efforts and connected with Indigenous academics involved in food sovereignty research . This was also the conference that gave us the idea to create the eFieldbook, as there were so many Tribes at the conference doing amazing agricultural practices that are making their communities healthier. They were so successful it was almost to the point of being intimidating. Where does a community start in order to get to that success? Through our collaborations, we have been able to take small steps forward and learn from our mistakes. The eFieldbook is our way of sharing with other Tribal communities our experiences and hopefully some of our successes.
