Kemēcemenaw: Menominee Food Sovereignty

Oneida Food Sovereignty Summit

There are numerous food sovereignty conferences and training programs that advocate for Indigenous self- determination, cultures, values, communities, economies, languages, wellness, and families while upholding best agricultural practices. Staff from the College of Menominee Nation and its extension division have made connections at the following conferences that have played an important part in our food sovereignty work. Having a well-established network and building relationships with other professionals engaged in food sovereignty work across Indian Country — learning about their experiences, successes, and challenges — is critical. This, by far, is not a complete list of conferences and training programs, but they have empowered and inspired our food sovereignty work. The Oneida Food Sovereignty Summit, held in Green Bay, Wisconsin, is intended for Native American farmers, ranchers, gardeners, businesses, and policymakers as well as Tribal agriculture staff, Native American nonprofits working in agriculture, small producers, Tribal producers, and Tribal leaders. The summit is an important opportunity to gather and collaborate on building healthy Indigenous food systems. Workshops and general session topics revolve around sustaining food systems, caring for our land, and strengthening Trib al sovereignty, with experiential learning activities including tours to Oneida’s apple orchard, Oneida Cannery Processing, and the Oneida Market. By attending the Oneida Food Sovereignty Summit, College of Menominee Nation (CMN) staff and partner attendees made connections to assist with local food sovereignty work. Specifically, CMN intends to develop a small aquaponics system and hopes to integrate Oneida into our training plan. In addition to this, we brought back the idea to extend the local community supported agriculture program by connecting with Oneida’s apple orchard.
